Santos is PBAPC’s defensive POY

THE Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Press Corps will be naming Arwind Santos of the Air21 Express their best Defensive Player of the Year, beating fellow Express Wynne Arboleda.

Santos, who ended first runner up behind 2008 MVP Kelly Williams of Philippine Cup Sta. Lucia, will get his award at the 2008 PBA Press Corps Annual Awards tomorrow night (7:30pm) at the Bayview Park Hotel in Roxas Blvd, Manila.

Santos emerged as this year’s press corps defensive player of the year after tallying in a total of 34.2 Sps this season.

His Fiesta Conference average was 13.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, while he finished with an average of 20.0 points per game, 11.7 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.5 blocks per game in the Philippine Cup.

Other awardees are Purefoods’ Peter June Simon as Mr. Quality Minutes and Red Bull’s Mike Hrabak as Comeback Player of the Year. Jess Ferrer has been chosen as Referee of the Year.

Rookie of the Year winner Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia leads the season’s All-Rookie Team which also includes Rain or Shine’s Joe Devance, now with Alaska in a recent trade, Coca-Cola’s Ronjay Buenafe, Purefoods’ Chico Lanete and Air21’s Doug Kramer.

They will be awarded elegant trophies by Zamora & Sons in the awards rites to be highlighted by the crowning of the Coach of the Year and the Executive of the Year.

Another highlight of this year’s PBAPC Awards is the special tribute to coach Tommy Manotoc marking the 30th anniversary of his 1978 Open championship with U-Tex that broke the Crispa-Toyota stranglehold and the silver anniversary of his grand slam feat with Crispa in 1983.

Alaska Milk team owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, awarded the Philippines’ Ernst & Young 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year, is the guest of honor and speaker. Past and present league officials are also expected to grace the occasion.

Simon and Hrabak were the unanimous choice as Mr. Quality Minutes and Comeback Player of the Year while Santos beat Air21 teammate Wynne Arboleda for the Best Defensive plum.

Without much debate, Simon was named Mr. Quality Minutes, an award given to those players who had extraordinary minutes despite limited playing time.

Though playing off-the-bench role most of the season, the University of Mindanao product averaged 13.4 points and 2.5 rebounds a game, a career-best. He is the third leading scorer on the Purefoods ball club, behind James Yap and Kerby Raymundo.

Hrabak was also an easy choice for the Comeback Player of the Year, regaining his old ways in his transfer to Red Bull.

aba, tnrade agad si sol mercado… mkhang may katandem na si norwood sa rain or shine… norwood-mercado tandem… aba naman… mkhang wala ng patapon na team sa PBA ngayon… Yari…. kaya dapat maghanda ang Express… us fans really want a center for the team… yung kaya bantayan the likes of asi, menk, and pena…

Sana nga di nagkamali ang express sa pagkuha kay Cholo instead of dela pena… Si dela pena kasi, complete package din… as a guard, he is tough, he can score pero di sugapa, he can deffend and tigasin ang katawan… Pero hopefully yung intensity ni Cholo ay madala niya sa PBA… ngayon na andyan na si Borboran at Cholo, the intal-eman trade should be pushed… may back-up na si Gary(Cholo) at tatlo na Sf natin(KG, Arwind and Borboran)… kailangan talaga may magsakripisyo… hndi pwedeng apat ang SF natin tapos ni wala tayong center…

Wag kayo maniwala sa forum hanggat hindi ko sinusulat about Kelvin Dela Pena… Good choice pa rin si Cholo Villanueva because of experience as champion…

Makakakuha rin tayo ng legitimate center… So far kelangan natin yung sentrong ready rumebound at mambutata at mahustle…

Hindi natin kelangan ng sentrong mahilig tumira lalo na sa tres.. kelangan natin yung mahilig sa put backs at mahusay magkick out ng bola at tumatapos ng fast break plays

Good A.M. sa mga air21 fans sir josef wala pa ring ba bagong news sa ating team sana naman mag post ka araw2x sana tangalin muna ang confirmation sa moderator kasi kunti nalang ang mag post kung ano ang nais nilang parating sa team natin…………sa tingin ko lng po no in my own opinion but doon sila kumuha ng undrafted center sa free agent gayon meron naman tayong makukuha gaya ni sam eman and jay-r reyes they are very good choive and good player wag silang kumuha ng pipisugin player sa free agent pool but hindi gayahin ng management yung idea ko at suggestion na rin dapat ito ang kanilang lineup…

From what I read in the other forums, it seems hindi na raw pwede yung direct Intal-Eman trade. I guess the reason for this is that kulang na rin ng Sentro ang SMC coz Ildefonso it seems had undergone some foot surgery and they only have Pena now and Eman to man the slot, so talagang hindi na nga pwede. They still have with them Bono, but I don’t think he would fit in the style of San Miguel so medyo malabo na nga ang ganitong trade. So the only way now I think that we can get Eman is to trade our wingman (Intal) to Purefoods for Villanueva then we trade back Villanueva to San Miguel for Eman so San Miguel can get a more reliable player to man the slot. I don’t think papayag lang sila na pakawalan si Eman without a more reliable replacement. And since Purefoods naman is still in need of a player who can play the SF position, so baka pumayag sila sa ganitong trade. Ang problema lang eh magkukulang na din sila ng big man with only Raymundo and Belga left to man the slot in the absence yet of Adducul so baka hindi na rin sila pumayag sa ganitong deal. Not unless siguro makapaglaro uli si Adducul. Anyway this is just my idea which we can try to pursue. Kasi we are really in need of a big man to man the slot for us.

Sotto signed with the Aces after being released by the Express.

Team manager and Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) board chairman Joaqui Trillo said that Sotto will receive a monthly stipend hovering within P100,000.

Trillo added that they have yet to sign Kelvin Dela Peña, the Aces? second round pick in last week?s PBA Annual Rookie Draft.
