Air21 selects Borboran, Villanueva

FOR coach Bo Perasol, choosing Mark Borboran, the best remaining available talent at sixth, is a good decision for Air21 since Gabe Norwood, Jared Dillinger, Jason Castro, Rob Reyes and Solomon Mercado will be automatically taken.

Last Sunday’s 2008 PBA Rookie Draft everything went as plan after the Express selected the former University of the East Red Warriors at sixth and they picked La Salle hotshot Cholo Villanueva at 13th in second round.

“We have another good young wing player,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol. “Choosing Mark has given us lots of options in our 2-3-4 spots and I’m sure he can gives us flexibility in those positions.”

The Air21 Express selected Villanueva because of his good leadership skills. “This guy (Villanueva) can really motivate his teammates due to his work ethics and at the same time through his leadership skills.”

Mark Borboran, known as fast break and set up finisher, averaged almost 20 points and eight boards after playing two years for University of the East. He finished 17. 1 points average for Hapee Toothpaste in the last PBL’s unity cup last May.

Cholo Villanueva, who led La Salle to UAAP championship last year, had an average of almost 16 points last year. He played for the Toyota Otis Sparks last conference and registered an 8.8 points average.

After the draft, coach Bo Perasol and assistant Leo Isaac are planning to invite certain undrafted rookies to attend the Express first day scrimmage at Xavier Gym.

“I’ll get the list of rookie free agents and I think we can tap some talents there especially a big man who can run the floor,” said Perasol. “The remaining 26 undrafted rookies remain a mystery for everybody who knows?”

The Rain or Shine Elastopainters, as expected, made Gabe Norwood, a former George Mason U star, their top overall pickafter selecting him first in the draft. Talk ‘N Text selected Jared Dillinger, Jason Castro and Rob Reyes their second, third and fourth pick, respectively.

Talk ‘N Text got the third pick from San Miguel Beer in exchange of Anthony Jay Washington.

Alaska picked Solomon Mercado at fifth, while Purefoods made Beau Belga its seventh pick and Bonbon Custodio, Larry Rodriguez and Kelvin Gregorio were selected by Red Bull, San Miguel Beer and Sta. Lucia Realty in the last eighth, ninth and 10th of first round, respectively.

The applicants selected in the second round were Pong Escobal (Talk ‘N Text No. 11); Tyrone Tang (Rain or Shine No. 12); Cholo Villanueva (Air21 Express No. 13); Chito Jaime (Sta. Lucia No. 14); Kelvin Dela Peña (Alaska No. 15); Jonathan Fernandez (Purefoods No. 16); Jeff Chan (Red Bull No. 17); Mark Cuevas (Red Bull No. 18); Chris Cabatu (Sta. Lucia No. 20).

ey..just got back from an out of town trip…but saw the draft…
Right M.Borboran was the logical choice for the team at that situation in the draft.
But Villanueva at 13th?Would have gone for Dela Pena or Jonathan Fernandez. But hey things maybe cooking up in the Express camp.So let’s see…
TnT got Dillinger, Castro,Rob Reyes…TnT shipped Jay Washington for the SMB pick…now that would mean that SMB would currently be having Washington , Ildefonso,Pena,Pingris and Eman as their post players..the way I see it eman is on the way out to be shipped to Air21 in exchange for…we don’t know who…but it is illogocal for SMB to hold on to any of their post players…baka naman si Pena ang mapunta sa atin?
I still do not have any idea on the other trade deals but aren’t we suppose to have that #8 pick? so what happened to that pick?
Going back to Villanueva…he has talent but I dont see him really getting the big break in the PBA…but who knows..he maybe a diamon in the rough but for him to have an impact at the two position either gary D or JC Intal would have to move out…but if David and Intal would stay then I don’t think we have a spot left for Villanueva.Basing it from what was said taht some players are still being eyed via the free agent pool I think we are really being set up for some lineup changes. I think team manager Lito Alvarez has the know-how in such dealings, which may seem to be a one step backward two steps forward deal…let’s just hope that whatever changes we see would later on be for the good of the team and probabaly would be the chemistry of our 1st Championship.To all the fans and the administrator we need more updates..just post them here..yeah even the news coming from the grapevine…tsk, tsk…Dela Pena can be someone we may have overlooked…I see him blosssoming in the PBA..well pag nakalaban natin malalaman natin…we also passed up on a consistent and reliable shooter in Jonathan Fernandez…or even a Jeff Chan.Well we don’t know what they hav plannned for the 13th pick..Villanueva.

Guys, Borboran, well, pwede na rin… he is the best talent left sa pick ng air21… but not enough to fill up what we really need, a BIG MAN! I’m just wndering, kung natuloy yung trade ni Eman at Intal, bakit nandun pa rin si Intal kagabi… Palagay ko, project ng SMB si Eman dahil aging na ang mga big man nila, kaya parang di tuloy yan… pero sana nga matuloy din… kung hndi man, hopefully magpakita na si Intal ng tunay na laro niya…

Para sa akin ok na rin yang combo guard adn forward si mark borboran para rin siyang si gabe my multi position 2,3 & 4….cholo also a good player for us back up ni wynne….Sana for me this coming season makuha man lng si eman kasi we really need a legitemate center for doug and marvin sana makuha rin natin si yancy ulit langking tulung niya sa team natin para dalawa na ang 6′9 natin for me sayang kasi kung hindi ma trade sana i trade nila kay gabby kasi malalakas na sila kinuha pa nila si dillinger,castro,rob reyes………i dont think ma rorotate pa siya ni coach reyes and he will add for us sana wala nang useless trade this time for me k na yan si jc baka mag blossom siya this season sana ito ang lineup natin this season

another thing is… i was so disgusted when Air21 passed up on KELVIN DELA PENA, instead, picking cholo at 13th overall…

i was so happy na TNT and rain or shine passed up on dela pena and expecting air21 will pick the former NCAA MVP… pero napangiwi ako ng hndi siya ang kinuha… why? KELVIN is a tough player who can score and deffend… maganda ang pangangatawan at may shooting din… well, sana lang di nila pagsisihan, siguro may nakita lang si coach Bo kay Cholo na wala kay Kelvin… pero may ibubuga naman si cholo, isa siya sa inasahan ng La Salle sa UAAP and he was a former Finals MVP din… Swerte ng Alaska, who wud expect na available pa si Dela Pena at no. 15…

gud move by coach Leo… sana may makita kayong big man sa undrafted players… pag may nakita(yung center talaga ang laro at may ibubuga ah) siguro
i-reserve niyo na lang muna si Ervin or either kay Gabby or Doug or isa kina Marvin or Egay… magshuffle na lang… pwede naman ata mag shuffle ng reserve players at active players after a game di ba? kung may bibitawan man, tingnan maigi…

He is a prototype of Arwind Santos, KG Canaleta and JC Intal. For the 13th pick, chosing Cholo Villanueva is also a good one, too. He can play the 1 and 2 position and he can motivate is teammates by his leadership and good work ethics.

Another prototype player..a bigman who can post, run, slash, shoot outside, versatile..

(Like Santos, Canaleta, Intal, De Ocampo..)

Too bad masyado na tayo napupuno ng Big Wing Men.. Kaso We have no choice kasi na pili na yung magagaling..

Sa 13th pick.. Pocholo Villanueva.. Good pick.. (Pero I much Prefer si Kelvin Dela Peña MVP ng NCAA!!) pero ok na yan.. at least my fire power coming from a DLSU.. we need his intensity..

PBAPC fetes PJ, Arwind and Mike

The PBA Press Corps has chosen Air21’s Arwind Santos as the Defensive Player of the Year, Purefoods’ Peter June Simon as Mr. Quality Minutes and Red Bull’s Mike Hrabak as Comeback Player of the Year.

Santos, Simon and Hrabak take the spotlight as Smart Sports and San Miguel Corp. present the 2008 PBA Press Corps Annual Awards at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bayview Park Hotel on Roxas Blvd., Manila.

Jess Ferrer has been chosen as Referee of the Year while Rookie of the Year awardee Ryan Reyes of Sta. Lucia leads the season’s All-Rookie Team which also includes Air21’s Joe Devance, Coca-Cola’s Ronjay Buenafe, Purefoods’ Chico Lanete and Air21’s Doug Kramer.

They will be awarded with elegant trophies by Zamora & Sons in the annual rites capped by the crowning of the Coach of the Year and the Executive of the Year honors.

Another highlight of this year’s PBAPC Awards is the special tribute to coach Tommy Manotoc, marking the 30th anniversary of his 1978 Open championship with U-Tex that broke the Crispa-Toyota stranglehold and the silver anniversary of his grand slam feat with Crispa in 1983.

Alaska Milk team owner Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, awarded the Philippines’ Ernst & Young 2007 Entrepreneur of the Year, is the guest of honor and speaker. Past and present league officials are also expected to grace the occasion.

Simon and Hrabak were the unanimous choice as Mr. Quality Minutes and Comeback Player of the Year awards, respectively, while Santos beat Air21 teammate Wynne Arboleda for the Best Defensive plum.

Without much debate, Simon was named Mr. Quality Minutes, an award given to those players who had extraordinary minutes despite limited playing time.

Though playing off-the-bench role most of the season, the University of Mindanao product averaged 13.4 points and 2.5 rebounds a game, a career-best. He is the third leading scorer on the Purefoods ball club, behind James Yap and Kerby Raymundo.

Hrabak was also an easy choice for the Comeback Player of the Year, regaining his old ways in his transfer to Red Bull.

Medyo malungkot tayo sa nangyari sa draft. Ang inaasam ko na makakuha ang team ng big man for the lineup eh napurnada. Well, talagang hanggang dyan lang siguro ang kapalaran muna ng team–from first runner up lang sa nagdaang conference then empty handed naman ngayon sa big man dito sa katatapos na draft. I hope may paraan pa sila to acquire a big man for their lineup. Big man na lang talaga ang gusto kong maidagdag sa team.

if ini’isip nyo guyz na di maganda pick ng air21 i think kung sa akin man lang kung di nyo kilala si Cholo villanueva di nyo ata alam na MVP siya kaya nasasabi nyo yan he lead DLSU para manalo sila sa finals and he had a leadership and di siya katulad ng mga point guard natin na parang walang play ang style ni cholo my play palagi!! ang problema kasi ng air21 pagmakalamang na ang kalaban gus2 ng ibang player siya ang maging heroics!!

Rob Reyes a very good post player was already picked by the very luck TNT so wala na tayong magagawa dun, so plan B was to pick Mark Borboran like we said a protoype player plays like our BIG 3(Santos, Cañaleta, De Ocampo)… well pwede na rin sana si Belga for me kasi may poste rin yun…

for Cholo, yup he is not the likes of Kelven Dela Peña but i’m sure Air21 had a reason why the team picked him… he can play as PG back up for Cruz and Arboleda or play as SG with David…

but sana nga manegotiate natin ang SMB for Eman…

To Neil and all those who are wondering why Air21 passed up on NCAA MVP Kevin Dela Pena…
I was also expecting that Air21 would go for dela Pena because he has “pro moves” and may blossom in the PBA…He maybe the next Ryan Reyes…well Solomon Mercado muna,but lumagpas na sya…anyway I guess Air21 had an inside information on dela Pena and why he was not picked up in the draft. Leo Isaac is the head coach of Mapua, probably he knows something about dela Pena that swayed the decision away from drafting him.Isaac should know better.I guess let’s just trust the decision of Air21 mgmt on their picks.
Trades have already started…JWash to SMB, Devance to Alaska…so the dream tandem of Norwood and Devance went pffttttt. What is Garcia thinking?They reactivated, Denver Lopez and Gherome Ejercito, while tehy still have Baguion, Arana and ibanez…plus they got Sol Mercado…well obviously they want to run but losing Devance was a no brainer…nakanakaw ang Alaska dyan…Ang Air21 kaya makaka-nakaw ng magandang trade with other teams?Sabi na nga ni Coach Bo sa press na may bottleneck sa wing position so management na daw bahala mag unclog nito…which means….yeah may trade na magaganap.

besides.. the 11th, 12th 13th, & 15th pick can play no.1 and no.2 positions..

sa palagay ko nga..

mas malaki qualities ni Dela Peña kesa kay Villanueva..

pero malalaman naman yan pagdating sa hard court..
bigyan ng chance si Cholo..

Sana any decision makings on the part of the management team ay suportahan natin.. kasi alam nila what’s the best for team.. and let’s show them our support and FAITH.. fo the upcoming All Filipino Conference..

Neil…yun na nga eh…bakit nya papapogiin si dela pena kung mas may lam sya na marami ang di alam kasi nga nahawakan nya ito sa college…I’m sure papakingan din naman ng mgmt si Coach Isaac. I still believe that dela Pena is made for the pros…baka kaya di napili ay hindi ganoon kaganda ang performance nya sa current NCAA tourney…well he may end up beinga free agent kung di ma sign ng Alaska…pereo malamang mapapirma sya kasi na trade na nila si Mercado.
Well Air21 fans…I heard this from the grapevine…may malaking pasabog na balita in a few days tungkol sa team…abanagan natin yan…can be good,can be bad pero dependwe sa pagtangap at sa magiging resulta this conference.Kung ano yan eh…di ko alam kung alam ni Pafa Josef…pero iniintay ko lang isulat nya, pero mukhang di nya pa alam…kadalasan kasi nahuhuli sa balita dito…lumabas na at umalingasaw na eh hindi pa rin lumalabas dito..at least minsan sana may writeup to dispell the rumors or may official statement from the mgmt..Pafa Josef..if you already know, isulat mo na! ok na si borboran kelangan nga lang natin talaga magka center. ung ala steve thomas maglaro, may post move, may short jumper at kaya magkick out ng bola, ok lang kahit di na masyado makasabay sa running game basta makuha lang niya ang defensive rebound bahala na ang apat na natitirang tumakbo para sa fastbreak, para kahit bumalik sa opposing team ang bola, depensa agad siya. ay dapat din pala eh malakas ang depensa niya. sino ba sa tingin niyo ang mga center sa pba ngayon na hawak ang mga qualities na sinabi ko?
