Air21 Express finish first runner up

EXPERIENCE prevails over hunger.
The Air21 Express stormed a mighty comeback in the fourth quarter but came up short in the pivotal minutes to lose the 2008 33rd PBA Smart Fiesta Cup title against the Ginebra Gin Kings in an 84-97 decision Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Down by 63-72 at the start of fourth period, the Express erased the deficit with a 16-11 blast, capped by the baskets of Gary David, Steve Thomas and Arwind Santos, to eventually turned the table around for their favor, 84-83, with 4:22 left.
But a 9-0 run by the Gin Kings under the last minute mark spoiled the Express comeback on the way to their eighth title and Ginebra coach Jong Uichico received his personal eighth crown too.
6-foot-9 hulking import Steve Thomas carried mostly the entire load for the Express by tallying in 24 points on 8-of-13 attempts in the field to go along with 12 rebounds and five assists and two blocks.
“I’ll be back next year,” said Thomas, who was responsible for the Air21 Express’ first finals appearance this season.
“My teammates are all good, so I’m looking forward to play here again and probably meet Ginebra in the finals again (he joked).”
Former Express Ronald Tubid paced Ginebra with 22 points on a perfect 11-of-11 in the free throw line and Eric Menk produced 21 points and 14 rebounds. They were both voted the Co-Finals MVP.
Sophomore Arwind Santos, who was dying to win the championship since the start of the series, made 19 points to go with six rebounds, four steals and two blocks, while spitfire Gary David scored 18 points and Nino KG Canaleta came off the bench with eight.
“My players have matured,” said Bo Perasol, the Express coach. “Still, they were not yet ready to face the impact of what the Ginebra crowd brought to the basketball game. But overall we did pretty well.”
Rebounding turned out to be a huge factor for the Gin Kings, as they out-rebounded the Express, 60-41. They earned more second chance points (22-8) than the Express.
Despite forcing the Gin Kings to 26 turnovers which gained them 27 points, the Express failed to capitalize when they needed most particularly in cruch time that they almost silenced the whole 22, 000 capacity crowd.
But breaks of the game wasn’t meant for the Air21 Express in the remaining time.
Ginebra claimed Game 1 (105-96), Game 4 (90-77), Game 6 (80-75) and Game 7 to wrap their best-of-seven finals series to 4-3. Air21 won Game 2 (124-90), Game 3 (97-87) and Game 5 (76-73).

pero halata sa mga mukha ng mga players and ni coach bo ang tension.. well, it is really the feeling when you are a 1st timer in the finals.. lalong lalo na.. you are dealing with a decisive game 7…

I was about to congratulate Air21 (kahit na baranggay ako) pero that bitterness about game 6 still had to be mentioned
there’s something about that which I can’t put my finger on. Just be gracious about defeat, win or lose. 
anyway, a big thank you Air21 for putting up a tough fight.
Air21 will move to greater heights, assuming they don’t trade players with trade buddy Talk ‘n Text again.

It hurts. Yeah we’re one win away from capturing the crown but came up short, for all the UBE REPUBLIC let’s just continue supporting the team. I know it’s really hard to accept the loss but that’s basketball. It is also a great experience for the team and I know we will come back strong next season. I still believe in this team no matter what. I’m always a witness for all of their up’s and down’s. Hopefully, we will stick with the lineup or make just a little change. Stay strong Air21. We are on the right track and after all this is just a young team composed of good developing players. I’m always here for the team Air21 your still number 1 on my heart, see you next season.

^watch the game again. not being bias at all but definitely the Ref’s are favoring ginebra during that game. Hay, too bad we lost. The spiderman and the rest really fought well. But honestly, some comments on the players, opinion ko lang po ito no offense to their fans:
1. Arboleda PLEASE! I know malakas ang kapit mo sa management pero naman, you really think you are a clutch player??? leave the scoring to your wingmen especially David and Santos. Huwag ka feeling Michael Jordan. Just concentrate on setting plays and defense especially on swiping the ball. There are a LOT of scorers already in the team. In short wag kang tira ng tira because you’re not that of a sure ball. Feeling mo lang yun.
2. Homer Se, nako po isa ka pa! Ang lakas mong mag coast to coast eh wala ka namang ball dribblig capability or skills. Ang sagwa mong tignan. Isa ka din na very confident kung tumira di naman din sure ball. You are a role player and will never be the team scorer. Kaya concentrate ka lang sa rebounds and hussle.
3. KG Canaleta, what happened? sabi nila wala ka daw consistency. I beg to differ, in fact consistent ka nga eh…consistent sa pagiging non-consistent. Problem with you is you fell inlove with the outside shot. Eh kung drive ka sana ng drive edi dami sasabit syo. Wag masyado ma-adik sa 3 points. Eh kung sila Caguioa na mas maliit sayo ng 4-5 inches di takot sumaksak, ikaw pa na mas my leaping capability and stretch.
Why can’t anyone from the team match up with Arwind Santos tenacity and hussle? Kung lahat sana kagaya nya walang kinain ang BGk. Eh problema gusto lahat tumira ng tumira (Arboleda puro bad shot selection pa!).
For me the offense should revolve on David, De Ocampo and Santos. Canaleta would be next basta better shot selection and slashing to the basket. Im not saying that the rest should not shoot the ball, pero alam mo naman kung kelan mo ititira. Again, this is not a hate mail, Im really a fan of A21 mainly because of Arwind Santos. Bawi tyo sa AFC!!!

I’m blaming the ref’s for the game 6 loss. Because it is really clear that they are the cause of that loss.

i want to congratulate you guys, even i am a GINEBRA die hard fan, i am very happy that we had a tough fight with you guys… Its realy a great game, you put the Ginebra in a hard time to catch the crown.. In fairness, Your team did well too, its just happen that our own team Ginebra, had more experience than with you guys, especially our own Erik Menk, named 2008 Finals MVP… We are hoping that you’ll just accept the fact this time that we are the Champions, no more Heartache, or some bitterness about game 6 still had to be mentioned

very crucial kasi yung game 6 that’s why it’s bit like a bitter pill to swallow kaya di maiwasan balikan yung game na yun - dapat dun pa lang tapos na yung series pero alam naman natin na pati sa basketball may pulitika.
Anyway congrats sa Air21 Express natin kahit runner-up tayo be proud pa din tayo na nkapasok tayo sa finals and we fought the battle heads up and with pride.

Referees are part of the game, just like injuries, slip on the floor and other variables of the game in basketball. So they cant be blamed. Ika nga murphy’s law yan, “when things will go wrong, it will go wrong”.
Anyway, it shows nga na medyo kulang pa sa puso ang A21 natin (except the games they won obviously), but they can. 2 lang naman yan eh after this experience, either this will serve as a driving force to capture the championship or they will revert to their underachieving team status. Remember how long before Sta Lucia won their championship?
I dont think coach Bo’s comment is more of kayabangan or whatever. He only said that so that the team will be more fired up. Pero not in a deliberate sence mayabang sya or arrogant.
lastly, Doug Kramer??? what the hell did they find in this guy? alam ko lang maganda si Cheska Garcia and He’s good looking and a model but I mean pagdating sa basketball, He’s under height for his position in the PBA, doesn’t have a consistent mid range jumper, good post defense and lateral movement, no offensive footwork or post move, nor a leaping ability…yeah, he compensate DAW through his intensity and hardwork but it’s not enough eh. Kakainin sya ng buhay ng the likes of taulava and he’s flat footed to guard smaller and agile players. Air 21 should have gone with Ken Bono, the guy can post well with a variety of moves, wide body but mobile, he can rebound and run the break, respectable jump shot up to the 3 point line. Maka Ateneo din ba ang A21? Sana they can pick a pure center this draft, yun masays na sya na makakuha ng rebounds and blocks.

BGK fans cant really help posting here and flaunting that BGKs the best etc etc. (except for the poster who really like to congratulate Air21 even if the’re pro BGK) Tapos titirahin nyo yung mga posters for Air21 or Coach Bo, Im just saying na since this is a AIR21 forum, it’s natural that posters here are biased. Siguro naman may sarili kayong forum di ba? Savor your vanillas sa forum nyo. Its ok to post here but to contradict every pro-air21s comments is considered flamming. The whole world knows already tha BGK is the FC Champions, Air21 is the runner-up. Tapos ang usapan.

SAYANG TALAGA PAFA JOSEF!…yan naman kagandahan ng sports eh diba? Ang crucial ngayon eh yung kung paano mag bbounce back ang team…will the experience make the grow or magpapahila sila pababa sa pagkatalo?
Sayang we made headway regarding defense this season pero noong Finals na nawala na naman…or BGK really defended well against Air21 top players…or the team just played their old cards and tried to win the card game by bluffing BGK…eh di kumagat…elims, semis…they played more as a team…pressure of the Finals maybe thats why medyo nagkanya-kanya and nawawala sa focus…masakit man mapansin pero ang tigas ulo nila Homer Se…what is he trying to prove…na for a big man he can dribble?That is okay kung walang mapasahan pero several times in the series …and most glarring last night, may pasa na sa teammates na mas finisher on the break…ala dribble pa rin…and si Arboleda…probably playing with a lot of pressure nawala ang laro sa finals…sundot ng sundot,yes he got his 500th steal award pero sa Finals everytime sumundot sya inaatake sya ng binabantayan nya…gamble ng gamble nagkakaroon tuloy ng atake sila Pacana at Artadi…lets face it hirap at ilang na ilang sya sa mga BGK defenders nya.I see a shake up with the backcourt of Air21…I heard pwede daw si Jason Castro…pero baka di natin abutin sa draft…hmmm we need really good role players in the team…kitang kita dahil nga 1st Finals appearance eh everyone wanted the “limelight”…tsk tsk..hard lessons learn delivery boys.
Points to ponder on…we have David, Santos, Canaleta and Intal…mabigat and deep sa position na yan pero ang apat na ito yearning to be big stars in the league….so how do we harness this deep 2-3 position? Baka naman kailangan na ng team maglaro ng tigiisang bola?I see one of the 4 players being shipped out I see much potential in Intal and Canaleta…with Intal so much promise from a rookie, next season puputok na si Rocket and Canaleta brings versatility just needs more confidence and sa dalawa more playing time but with David and Santos around asa pa…Can Coach Bo solve this mystery…ngayon para na syang Magnolia with a stuffed lineup(na biniyak din agad ni Siot kasi hirap ng maraming stars)…let
’s face it nagiging “SUPERSTAR” na ang mga players…judging from team history pwede na ibenta yan and get hungrier players who will play more on the TEAM concept.
Do we keep the team intact…okay nga kung ganoon pero are the players willing to accept their roles?Let’s see we got Gabby Espinas from Magnolia…doon walang minuto sya…dito sa atin kahit kaunti meron…pero that is one player who is aching to breakout…potential yan…Marvin Cruz is a potential pero he has to accept na di sya masyado mag-ggrow with Arboleda at the helm lalo na kung si Arboleda ang magiging role model nya… will Arboleda be willing to give in to more minutes just like guard rotation of Magnolia with Racela and Cortez,can he face up to the challenge of playing for another team.So what about Egay B? Egay can still give quality minutes pero just like Arboleda medyo matanda na…somethings gotta give…Can Coach Bo harness the potentials of his 3 guard roatation?I see a 3 guard rotation but not with the 3, we need a hungrier, mentally tough PG to lead the attack sadly the way Arboleda played in the FInals…leaves a lot to be desired with regards to mental toughness an essential for a PG.
Regarding the frontline…kung mapipigilan si Homer Se na mag ambisyon maging PG okay lang for him to finish his career with the team…pero sabi ko nga kailangan ng mental toughness ang PG position…HOmer is not a PG nor is he mentally tough.I see Kramer …kung di sya ililipat ng team to move up to the spot of Homer SE…kung mawawala din si Se…Se like Arboleda played differently in the finals.
Team needs a legitimate post threat so they can harness the versatility of Ranidel De Ocampo…Sotto is a big ?…Let’s use our 7th pick as trade bait plus David, Santos or Canaleta to get a legit big man…pwede din legit big plus stable guard…kung may takers si Arboleda pakawalan na and let him prove himself sa ibang team and pati na rin kay Boss Bert na he can fend for his own…para na siguro mawala pressure in being the son in law of the owner…big challenge yan…will he accept?
A Cyrus B for David trade looks tempting….is ISaac being poised to take over next conference…I think Jawo is out of the question..nakabot naman tayo Finals w/o him…but kung aalingasaw na naman ang usapan tungkol sa kanya eh tuluyan na at wag gawing gimick…I guess he can bring mental toughness to the team…that would be the price to pay(millions)…
“CAN’T TEACH HEART” as they say…so Air21 kudos…being second is still better than 3rd or last…but the team has to find its SOUL..its HEART…WE NEED TO BOUNCE BACK!!!! BGK won the series; Air21 the best team w/o Fil-shAm’s
Congratulations to Barangay Ginebra Kings for winning the championship against the pure Filipino team aside from import, Air21 Express. They won the title by always saying they won it by heart. Yeah Right! Anyway, Thanks for the best game played ever by Paul Artadi and Ronald Tubid. The game is much more exciting because of these two players providing excellent basketball throughout the series. Nice Job!
We all know that Barangay Ginebra is the most popular basketball team in the Philippines, because it markets liquor that is very affordable and very nice drink for Filipinos. The fan rocks the Araneta Coliseum by giving support to their favorite team every time Ginebra San Miguel plays in the venue. Ten percent of the crowd goes to “UBE REPUBLIC” I am one of them.
I am much very proud for the Air21 Express because even without Fil-Sham’s or lets say Half Filipinos-Half Blood the team still reach the finals with pure heart and determination till the very last game. It is very nice to still have a team who believe in all pure Filipino balers rather than getting a fil-am player just to win a title. So keep it up Air21 management for not selecting fil-am players in a draft.
The Legend Robert Jaworski is not happy for the championship of Ginebra definitely and many Filipinos. Because having that kind of Ginebra line-up was totally messed. Fil-Ams players can win you a crown in the PBA but if we all try to believe in our pure Filipino balers we can win in the international tournament.
ABC 5, and the new “TV 5 Shake mo, TV mo” were owned by Mr. Tony Boy Cojuanco and who owns the three teams in the PBA, of course San Miguel Corporation by the Cojuanco’s. They are Purefoods TJ Giants, Magnolia Beverage Masters and the Barangay Ginebra Kings. TV 5 ends the contract to the PBA for the last game of this season in a very exciting championship game. Finally, “It’s over” for the ABC and TV 5 coverage. No more bias coverage and one sided support for the Cojuanco’s team.
Next season the PBA will be aired over CS “Channel 9” and the Basketball TV under the Solar Entertainment Corporation. We must expect a lot of good coverage, more camera views, good english speaking commentators not bias, and more PBA Action and PBA Classic Game Replay in Basketball TV.

the reason why air21 lose the championship is the pressure given by their coach to his player by his big mouth prediction and adding also the pressure of the game, the crowd and the pride at stake… a championship is won not by boasting up but by pure heart and determination… I’ve been watching PBA since the late 80’s and blaming referees for a lost is an old story… an alibi for a hurt ego… maybe lessons learn by your team especially for your coach (masyado kasing nagpakashowbiz)… this is blessing by fire and your experience with your first final appearance shall have a positive effect on you and be more better team next time… and hopefully next time your coach (and some players) must keep their mouth shut and avoid boastful words…..congrats to Air21 for playing a good series pinahirapan nyo din ang GinKings and yet Ginebra players respect each of your talents… kaya nga sila nagconcentrate dun e… and win the championship by experince and most especially by HEART
