Thomas delivers, Air21 lands to Final 4

WHO SAYS Steve Thomas is only an inside threat?

The 6-foot-9 Thomas drilled in a game-winning turnaround jumper to help the Air21 Express squeeze out a narrow 90-88 win over the Magnolia Beverage Masters in the Smart 33rd PBA Fiesta Conference Wednesday night at the Araneta Coliseum.

“I know McCaskill really wants me to attack because he’s giving me some space but I’m confident that I can knock that shot,” said Thomas, who finished with a game-high 22 points, 17 rebounds and five assists. “I don’t want to get doubled, so I take it there.”

After squandering a 14-point advantage in the fourth period, the Express went on to Thomas in the dying seconds to hit the unlikely fade away 20-footer against the outstretched arms of 7-foot-1 Amil McCaskill to establish a rare three-game winning streak.

With no timeout left with only 2.6 ticks remaining, Danny Ildefonso of Magnolia threw a desperate heave that kissed the rim before the final buzzer sounded as Air21 improved to 11-6 record to become a game away from securing an outright semifinals berth.

Bo Perasol, the Express head coach, admitted the play was design really for Thomas when Egay Billiones milked the 26-second remaining time, but he is expecting his hulking import to attack and get a high percentage shot.

Agreed play

“That’s what we agreed upon during our last timeout. We can win it or send the game to extension with the ball on Thomas’ hands in the closing seconds,” said Perasol. “I’m really surprised when he hit it but I’m confident that he can make it.”

Thomas, who averages 24.1 points and 16.6 rebounds per game this conference, shot 10-of-23 in the field, mostly on perimeter shots and soft touch jumpers.

Air21 started on fire in the early going with Gary David executing a wildly reverse lay-up to register a 21-14 lead with 3:24 remaining, but Magnolia responded with an 8-4 spurt to trim down the deficit to 25-22 at the start of the second quarter.

The Magnolia Beverage Masters began to crawl up in the second frame as Dorian Peña, Lordy Tugade and Danny Ildefonso scored basket each to give them the first taste of the lead, 28-25, with still 11:05 remaining.

After a 33-all deadlock, the Beverage Masters waxed hot to balloon their lead to 41-33 with 3:14 to go on a two-handed dunk by McCaskill, who led Magnolia with 20 points and 15 rebounds.

Halftime ended at 48-44 in favor of the Beverage Masters, who finished 19-out-of-41 (46.3%) total attempts in all corners in the first half against the 17-of-44 (38.6%).

Leg Cramps

Playmaker Wynne Arboleda, who substituted by Billiones under last three minutes due to leg cramps, made seven of his 13 points in third canto, including a trey, followed by a stab from De Ocampo as the Express regained the edge, 66-65, with 3:27 left.

Jean Marc Pingris, who got 15 points, scored two consecutive shots late in the third quarter to keep Magnolia ahead by a point, 69-68.

But Air21, with rookie Marvin Cruz surprising them with timely baskets, unleashed a swashbuckling 17-2 burst early in the fourth period to post an 85-71 lead – its biggest advantage – with 6:02 remaining.

Cruz, the 12th pick in the rookie draft last year, scored all seven points in that run which included amazing stop and pops shots.

Magnolia refused to just fall and die and valiantly waged a strong comeback in the last five-minute mark as it dropped a scorching 15-1 burst, capped by Tugade’s game-tying three-pointer, 88-all, with only 26 ticks remaining.

Air21, though, fended off Magnolia’s late game rally as the Express executed their crucial game plan very well courtesy of Thomas.

Unlikely Territory

The Beverage Masters, with the loss, slid to fourth place with 9-8 slate which also denied them of a chance in securing an outright semifinals berth. The Express, in unlikely territory, have stayed in first place with a league-leading 11-6 card.

A win by Air21 against Purefoods next Wednesday will automatically assure them of an outright semifinals slot – the first ever for Express since entering the league in 2002.

The Red Bull Barakos (10-6) and the Coca-Cola Tigers (9-7) are currently placed at second and third, respectively, with both teams have still two remaining games left.

Gary David scored all 14 points in the first three quarters, while Arwind Santos had three triples and a basket for 11 points along with six rebounds and four blocks.

Homer Se added eight points and eight boards, while Ranidel De Ocampo had seven points and Niño KG Canaleta contributed six points.

Despite the tall frontline of McCaskill, Ildefonso, Pingris and Dorian Peña, the Express out-rebounded the Beverage Masters, 50-45, which also earned them ahead in second chance points, 17-4.

“There are still a lot of complications,” said Perasol. “To be sure that we make it to the semis outright, we might as well do our best to beat Purefoods in our last game.”

“The team’s morale is so high that I guess the boys’ mindset is that we can beat any team we face right now.”

….. Fans at the right side of the Big Dome turned to a frenzied celebration after Thomas scored the game-winning fade away jumper with just two seconds left…

….. Bo’s game plan came at the right place and right time since Magnolia has no timeout left… It looked like Bo outsmarted Siot for the second time around… The first one was last May in Antipolo City when the Express won, 96-90…

…..One of the referees, whom I forgotten the name, backtracked twice regarding his first two calls that drew ire from both teams…. Anyway, some calls were not right others were correct but what really important is we won…

….Gabby Espinas, last year’s forgotten rookie, showed massive improvement in 10 minutes of action when he scored on tip-in in the first quarter. He also involved to a heated argument against former teammate Danny Ildefonso…

….Ildefonso was assessed with technical foul due to trash-talking… Espinas also had one defensive board and two offensive rebounds…

…..Team Manager and Governor Lito Alvarez told Espinas in the dug-out after the game that it is now the right time for him to shine – just what he did in the NCAA although PBA is different….

….. “You need to show up Gabby… This is the time for you.”

……Aside from David’s highlight reels, Santos flattered everybody with his timely shot blocking skills where he swatted Peña, Ildefonso and even the attempted two-handed dunk of 7-foot-1 NBA veteran McCaskill…

…. Canaleta was also a major factor in defense despite making only three attempts…

…..Bo started the game with Thomas, De Ocampo, David, Arboleda and Se… He had a good start with usual scorers Canaleta and Santos were sitting on the bench…

…..Arboleda asked to be substituted because of cramps and Egay provided quality minutes off the bench with one steal…

I’ve watched that game @ Araneta Center. Thomas’ shot was very unbelievable!!! I think that they are now ready for the semis. I just hope they can win the title.

according to a reliable source,credit has to be given to the preparation as well as the game plan and eventual adjustments made by Coach Bo and his “lean and mean” staff.They clearly saw and anticipated what Magnolia may have in store in defending Thomas and they made adjustments in practice even if the team lost 1 practice session because of Tyhoon Frank.
Thomas who was feeling something “funny” with his knees was seen hobling in practice but was seen being given extra pointers and workouts regarding his post tendencies and moves by coach Bo’s assistants.They actually practiced and encourage Thomas to take those kind of SHOTS!(Tsamba na kung tsamba pero kung enensayo eh mas maganda percentage na mak tsamba..diba?)
According to my source particular attention was given to how Thomas can handle a double teaming defense of MBM.Video clips was also given and shown to the players regarding MBM defense and how to attack it.
When we were down we saw a lot of negative comments on the way the team is being run by Coach Bo as well as his capabilities, good thing management stuck with him and gave him the full support plus his mind right now is much clearer..he is now coaching,the players are now believing in their coach as well as themselves.As observed he seems to have a clearer coaching mind right now (wala na si Boy Bulong at Mang Teming Tanda) he just listens to his lean and mean coaching staff,makes simple decions that are effective and is honest with his players…he puts the players above himself in some aspects unlike other coaches who want more of the limelight.
The spot of the team right now is already an achievment!
Mas nakatipid pa tayo ngayon kaysa kinuha si Big J na di naman segurado resulta…ngayon with much less eh we are getting the same results…tama nga naman!
Thomas is a real gem of an import!A true Warrior inside the court! Dapat Best import yan…pero kahit hindi okay lang sa kanya aang importante manalo ng Championship!!!!

Magnolia is still possible to make it to the semis via a playoff kung maipapanalo nila last game nila against alaska tapos redbull will drop their last 2 games,Coke will lose to the aces and win against the realtors, and Alaska will win against Ginebra, THEREFORE 5 teams(including TNT if they will win on their last 2 games) might end their elimination records with identical 10-8 record…HAALLLAAAA! #2 to #6 ang tie, and ang scenario sa playoffs might be quotient system so the upper 10-8 holders will battle for the last semis slot tapos yung #3 auto Qfinals na, and yung lower 10-8 holders ay magplayoff kung sino last Qfinals slot…

Actually Talk n Text,SLR and Ginebra ALSO STILL have their chances for a playoff for the 1 of 2 semis slots kasi possible pa silang mag 10-8…

Those scenarios are really possible, PROMISE! interesting yun… pag yun nangyari, kahit matalo tayo sa purefoods, automatic semis na tayo…

Eto naman scenario ng TEAM natin na dapat tingnan… We are assured of AT LEAST a playoff berth for that automatic semis seats… possible na magtie ng 11-7 ang 3 teams at the end of the elimination round including us(pag natalo tao sa purefoods), the other two are

So as of NOW, red bull, alaska, magnolia, Coke, TNT, Ginebra, SLR and are rumbling it out for positions for the last automatic semis seat or sa automatic Q’finals man lang… Purefoods naman on the other hand, kahit sila ang #9 ngayon, possible pa sila na makapasok sa top 5 for at least a playoff for the last automatic Q’finals seat…Welcoat is already eliminated….

Ganyan katindi ang positions ng mga teams ngayon… so all the remaining games are bearing games pa rin for the teams except for welcoat…

GUYS, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PRAY na manalo ang ALASKA aces mamaya against the tigers… And sana matalo naman sila(ACES) sa Sunday against Magnolia… If both scenario happens… We are already assured one of the automatic semfinals stint.

This is because if alaska will win mamaya, 9-8 na ang coke so wala na sila(tigers) pag-asa na makatabla sa atin(air21 currently 11-6)… and kapag natalo naman ang alaska sa Sunday, the will have an identical 9-8 record with the tigers so wala na rin sila pag-asa makatabla sa atin… it means even before our last game sa wednesday, may chance na makapasok na tayo agad sa semis… At yun ay kapag nangyari ang binanggit ko… So let’s pray na mangyari ‘to…

depende.,ang standing kc ng alaska ay 9-7. they have 2 remaining games(mbm,gins). kung matatalo sila in at least one of their games, makakasiguro tayo sa outright semis khit matalo tayo against purefoods. pasok dn tayo kung matatalo ang redbull(10-6) sa 2 games din na natitira for them. so 3 pang teams ang may chance for outright semis; express,aces and redbull. 2 team lang ang kailangan sa automatic semis slot..

Guys nothing to worry kahit matalo tayo sa PF or manalo pa ang Tigers, Aces at RB, pasok pa rin tayo sa 1-2 spots kasi mataas ang quotient natin…

Anyway, delikado tayo sa PF pinipilit manalo ng mga refs for its last two games… Swerte TNT nakalusot sila (102-101) at minalas ang Sta. Lucia (104-89)…

Hey! I’m back

First, congratulations sa Express… big lead It gives us, the fans, more reasons to support the team. Iba rin kasi yung feeling na yung team na sinusupport mo is doing a really good job, sooobrang astig and sooobrang worth yung pag-bablog natin about it (I do blog about the team haha!)

Hindi kasi talaga ako makapasok sa message board. I’m not sure kung it’sjust my computer, pero… I’ve used other computers na rin and it just doesn’t work. So, do I need to install something for the message board to work in my computer?

i agree,.maganda kung maipapanalo natin ang game sa purefoods pero dapat dn na mejo relax lang at ingat ang laro para iwas injury, mahirap na noh, knowing purefoods npaka physical nla maglaro at talagang nananakit. lalo pa ngayon na kailangan nilang manalo.

Good observation regarding Thomas. Pwede sya sa NBA, lalo na na nagkaroon na sya kompyansa sa paglalaro sa PBA. We hope that someday umabot sya doon like other PBA imports na gumanda ang career after playing in the PBA. Rumor has it that Thomas is already being eyed by several scouts for NBA teams…san kaya sya mapupunta if ever? Sa Boston…para may double si Garnett?HAheheeh!
Although it is far fetched that Thomas will be a big star in the NBA kung umabot sya doon pero makaaktulong sya as a good role player…Dapat nga ata dati pa sya nandoon kaya lang di nagkaroon ng break because di nagkaroon maganda follow up college career nya.
