Air21 is on top of all things

WHEN the Express fumbled in crunch time, hulking Steve Thomas came at the right time and right place to settle all things and put them to unfamiliar territory.
 
The 6-foot-9 Thomas drilled in four straight points under the final minute mark to guide the Air21 Express to a come-from-behind 91-87 win over the listless Welcoat Dragons that towed them on top spot of 33rd PBA Smart Fiesta Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.
 
Thomas, who finished with 29 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks, shattered an 87-all deadlock after hitting a hook-shot with 37 ticks to go, and then the Dragons missed important shots thrice, including Compton’s last attempt beyond the arc.
 
Wynne Arboleda and Ranidel De Ocampo both missed two free throws attempts each that could seal the win as early as 17 seconds left, but Thomas frustrated the Dragons after getting the offensive rebound off De Ocampo’s miss free throws.
 
He made two free throws with 7.5 remaining to peg the last count and pull the Air21 Express up on top with a league-leading 10-6 card. The Welcoat Dragons sank to the bottom with a frustrating 4-12 mark.

Already eliminated 

The Dragons were officially eliminated after the Sta. Lucia Realtors routed the Alaska Aces, 95-75, in the second game.
 
“We have to treat every game like a do-or-die game,” said Thomas, who shot 11-of-17 shooting in the field and converted a perfect 7-of-7 in the foul line. “We need to win to get an outright semifinals berth.”

Welcoat’s 6-foot-10 import Marquis Gainous gave the Dragons a four-point edge, 87-83, heading to the last 2:17 after making two straight baskets.

But Thomas scored on a stab followed by Arwind Santos’ tip-in that tied the count to 87-all with 1:30 ticks left.

Both teams exchanged empty baskets before Thomas broke the deadlock and the Express came up with huge rebounds to spoil the Dragons.

“Getting this 10th win is what we hoped to achieve and now we can start thinking about getting to the top two after the eliminations,” said Air21 head coach Bo Perasol. “I’m thankful Thomas delivered well in the game again.”

Thomas scored 12 points in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Fearless

Fearless guard Gary David, who shot 2-of-5 beyond the arc and made 4-of-7 in the field, struggled on the floor most of the time due to Welcoat’s leech-like defense, but he still finished with 14 points in 33 minutes of action.

6-foot-5 Homer Se, showing big fighting heart in all games, racked up 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds with three steals, while sophomore Arwind Santos scattered 11 points and collected a game-high 17 rebounds.

“It is all our desire to become No. 1,” said Santos. “We just to play that way. Maybe it is too tough to play like that but in pro basketball you must be tougher physically and mentally,” said Se.    

Air21 could not register a huge lead, as what the fans expected from them. In fact, the Express trailed in the first quarter (15-20) and at halftime (38-42) after resident import Alex Compton and Gainous finished with 12 and 13 points in first half.

The Air21 Express, with Se firing 10 points in the third quarter, began to crawl back and the Welcoat Dragons’ slim lead were slowly melting even they established a 46-38 lead early in the second half after Jay-R Reyes’ lay-up.  

But Se scored three straight baskets and David nailed a trey to keep the game at jabbing distance, 47-52, and the Express surged to a scorching 11-3 run, capped by Arboleda’s three-point basket to seize the edge, 58-55, with 3:46 left.

Impressive rebounding

Air21 outscored Welcoat in the third frame, 29-23, to get the lead at the start of payoff frame, 67-65. The final canto turned out a close contest for both teams as they kept trading baskets until Air21 got the upper hand in the last minute.

“Honestly, I was expecting to breeze through in this game with all the motivations at hand for the team,” Perasol told reporters after the game. “I felt I gave the boys so much pressure instead of just letting them play.”

“But we’ve achieved our initial goal and I’m happy for that,” he said.

Air21’s rebounding was definitely the key factor when it collared 61 rebounds and Welcoat only managed to get 40 boards. The Express, with that, took more second chance points than the Dragons, 13-4.

Air21 registered more assists (22-13), steals (11-10), and blocks (6-3) than Welcoat too.

“Our chance to make the top two depends on how we look at it. The motivation now is if we make the top two, we’re a series away from the championship which we’ve been aspiring for a long time now.”

Air21 shot 34-out-of-80 (42.5%) total field goals against the 29-out-of-77 (37.7%) of Welcoat despite the Express’ 24 turnovers.

Point guard Wynne Arboleda contributed nine points, seven assists, three rebounds and three steals in 34 minutes of play, while Ranidel De Ocampo had seven points due to early foul trouble.

The Express have to assignments remaining in the elimination round – Magnolia and Purefoods.

Air21’s Blog Notes:

…. This is the second time resident import Alex Compton, who serves as one of Welcoat coaching staffs, suited up for the Dragons as second import. The last time was last year when he played alongside Charles Clark, Rob Sanders and Wayland White….

…He replaced Corey Santee as import…

….Compton scored 38 points, including seven three-pointers, last April 22, 2007 but the Dragons lost to the Express, 94-102… In his second appearance, Compton finished with only 16 points and three assists but accounted for three turn overs…

….Air21 defeated Welcoat, 105-96, last March 30 this conference. But the Express were struggling last night… Thanks to Steve Thomas and the rest of the Express for hanging on…..

….Everybody was expecting this win, and the fans, players,and coaches were happy despite the close result… Team manager Lito Alvarez was glad too…

….This is the fourth time Air21 defeated Welcoat this season…

    Angas tlga ni steve monster thomas hehehe…..sana mag tuloy2x na sila sa outright semis and hopefully ung inasam nating championship sana makuha nila ito this year……comment lng no para mas solid pa ang ting lineup sana itrade nila si doug at jc kay jr reyes noon ko po ito sinasabi sa management ng air21 kasi ung doug he has the rebound its enough for the system of air21 kay jc naman i trade siya kay pj simon we need some energizer sa team natin hehehehehe……

    … si JC kapag nakabalik, siya na kapalitan ni David… I know maninibago siya konti pero pakidevelop lag siya into a shooting guard para may kapalitan si David… Actually Gary, JC, Arwind and KG, ok lang na magpalit palitan sila off the court
    eh, pero masmaganda na yung may primary positions….

    And tama rin na isang player na lang ang kulang, isang legitimate center…kaya masmaganda ang nilalaro ng express is because may center sila ngayon in steve thomas… iba talaga kapag may reliable big man or center… sila ranidel at Se, hndi talaga center… i assure u, kapag all filipino at may mala thomas tayong center na pinoy, LALO tayo katatakutan ng lahat ng teams…

    Lupit, another come from behind win… tama si coach Bo, it is how you finsih the game that matters the most….

    Wag tayong mag overconfidence dahil ang susunod na kalaban natin ay magnolia ta puredoods diba mabibigat nating kalaban yun sana manalo sila kundi nasa outright quarters naman tayo sayang ang pagaasa natin sa semis lets just pray and hope they will win there last 2 games….sana manalo for my opinion no ang nakuhang rookie ng air21 ay pangit kasi we got doug pero para sa akin he is very useless kasi hindi siya nakakatulong sa team natin his a rebounder but he cant score guys sa tingin ko hindi yan tatagal sa pba para sa akin pang amauteur lng nilalaro niya parehas lng sila ni marvin,jc for there are cheap rookie….sana next rookie draft maganda ang makukuha nila for me its not the look we need its not the rivalry school katulad nalang ni ronjay i like this guy his humble at magaling na players hindi katulad nila doug,marvin,jc such a loser guy…..no offensivement…sana kunin nila ung performance level hindi yung schools and looks…at sana si eman nalang kinuha nila instead of gabby his so weak gaya rin ni ervin…..i think guys we need a back up center for thomas para manalo tayo at mag champion sana makuha nila si jr reyes he has a potential to be a star….and pg playmaker…….sana parating mo ito sir josef sana management ng air21…thanks and more power sa air21 gogoggogo sa finals…

    like ko rin si ronjay, i’ve met him a couple of times at sobrang humble at bait nya tlaga. isa sya sa mga players na gustong gusto kong nilalapitan..hehe
    regarding sa air..tingin ko, kailangan lang ng mga rookies ng sapat na time para makuha ung kumpiyansa nila..ito ung 1st yr nila sa pro so hindi talaga maiiwasan na mag adjust muna sila at mailang.,i think ganyan din si cardona nung 1st yr nya db, ang mapapansin lang sa kanya is puro turn overs but look at him now, a star of tnt.,
    Yes, i agree, ung 3 kinuha ng air sa draft puro gwapo tlaga but i bliv n hindi un ung rison kng bkit cla kinuha ng express o ung school na pinanggalingan nla.,(although nung una, para skin mas dpat nlang knuha si jonas villanueva)marvin,jc,doug, pati na rin si gabby had proven a lot sa collegiate and amateur league, napapanood ko cla non isa sila sa mga superstar ng school at team nila sa pbl,napapasama sila sa mythical 5 selection.,at wag natin kalimutan, si marvin cruz ang nag mvp nung nagpadala ang pbl ng team para sa SEABA klban ang ibat ibang basketball team mula sa ibang bansa..so sana wag naman nating i deprieve ung mga rookies ng team natin,.sana bigyan natin sila ng time at chance para i prove ung sarili nila..at isi share ko rin mababait at humble din naman ung mga rookies natin ah.,lalo na si marvin cruz, sobrang bait tlaga nya! dbest! actually nag treat p nga sya ng lunch nung ngbday ung isang fan nya!la lng share ko lang..hehe

    TO AIR21: Grab the oppurtunity,the opportunity for greatness and be a part of the team history as well as the PBA.

    To the players, look at your teammates, look at your children,your relatives as well as the people around your daily life…give them a good reason to be really proud of you,not just winning those two remaining games but play with passsion and with all the heart…BELIEVE!!!!!!GO FOR THAT ELUSIVE FIRST FINALS APPEARANCE!!!!AYAN NA MAGPAPABAYA PA BA?

    Management: Can you promise na pag pumasok sa semis or finals ang team eh bibigyan nyo ang mga supporters ng “fans day”? Just an idea, tignana na lang ang mga nasa site natin, kaunti pa lang yan marami pang iba na walang time na mag internet pero just the same eh may passion sa pagsunod at suporta sa team.
    Can we already see the “EXPRESS DANCERS”?

    Malayo pa ang 2nd conf..focus muna tayo sa current conf…give the rookies some time,at least this conference to mature…pag off season eh tignan na natin kung ano mangyayari….FINISH THE CONFERENCE STRONG!!!!!

    Air21 to go all the way
    FOR the first time in its six-year existence, the Air21 Express team is finally living up to its name—fast, rampaging and ready to take on every team that stands on its path.

    Although the Express team has built a reputation of a being tough team that gives its all every game, this is the first time that Air21 has actually led the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) standings, heading into a possible semifinal stint.

    Last Wednesday, the Express grabbed the Smart-PBA Fiesta Conference solo lead with a 91-87 victory over a pressure-free Welcoat team that went into the game with nothing to lose. The result was a 10th win in 16 games, which for a young team like the Express, is a mean feat considering that the powerhouse teams are bunched above the .500 mark.

    Air21 Chairman and owner Bert Lina was also delighted of the team’s accomplishment.

    “First time itong nangyayari,” said Lina. “Sa ganitong stage ng liga, we’re still on top and that counts a lot.”

    One more win and the team will be entitled to at least a playoff for one of the two semis sots. Sweeping its last two games will give Air21 a guaranteed semis berth.

    “We’re very ecstatic. To be in this situation (lead) is inspiring everyone no end. We admit, we still have a long way to go and we haven’t achieved anything concrete just yet, but this situation is a confidence booster, something that we will carry all the way to the more important battles ahead,” said Air21 president and team manager Lito Alvarez, who added that one of the keys to the Express’ success so far in the Fiesta Conference is their lineup that has remained untouched for sometime now.

    “Mr. Lina wants to keep this team intact. Unlike many teams which have replaced their respective imports, we have stuck with Thomas, and so with the rest of the locals. With this, tuluy tuloy lang ang laban, walang sistemang nagugulo,” the amiable team manager added.

    Securing the services of rebounding demon Steven Thomas and defining the roles of his star players like Gary David, Arwind Santos, KG Canaleta, Ranidel de Ocampo and Wynne Arboleda, has did the trick for the achieving Express team of coach Bo Perasol.

    May nagbabalik ba na bisita sa site na ito? Anung nakikita ko dyan na Air21 vs. Sta Lucia?! Paanung nangyari?! Hay, mga kaibigan kapag may nanggulo wag pansinin, katulad nung last time. Tignan mo napanis walang pumansin… Dito pag may gumulo ha-huntingin natin.

    guyz, this is the best conference the team has ever played and im sure di na pakakawalan ng team ito!!!

    sayang, wala laro nung sunday, i was excited to watch kasi gs2 ko matalo red bull. pero wala pala kasi nga may bagyao… tama nga naman na isuspend kais
    1-malulugi ang PBA, sales, at araneta kasi konti ang manonood dahil may bagyo
    2-brown out sa ibang lugar so hndi rin mapapanood ng mga home viewers

    pag natalo red bull, 1 win away na tayo sa semis.. pero siyempre mas maganda ipanalo na pareho… kaya natin yang magnolia, wala na si watkins, maskakayanin ni Thomas yang si McCaskil…

    Express can deliver

    IF you asked me at the start of the conference which teams would top the eliminations of the 2008 Smart Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference, other than perennial doormat Welcoat, the two teams I would have mentioned last are the Air21 Express and the Red Bull Barakos.

    I’ve always thought that those two teams behave like farm teams of the PBA heavyweights because they routinely ship out their best players to other teams. Red Bull sent Willie Miller to Talk N Text a year after he won his first MVP award. Kerby Raymundo was shipped to Purefoods; Lordy Tugade, Larry Fonacier and Rico Villanueva to Magnolia (Villanueva has since been sent to Purefoods); and Junthy Valenzuela to Ginebra.

    Air21 seems to have only Talk N Text as its regular customer having sent its best players—Yancy De Ocampo, John Ferriols, Jay Washington, Renren Ritualo and the latest: draft pick Yousif Aljamal—to the Phone Pals.

    And yet here they are, on top of the standings at the homestretch of the double-round elimination. Air21 is at no. 1 with 10 wins and six losses, while Red Bull is at second spot with nine wins and six losses.

    Well, I can say that nobody but nobody motivates like Yeng Guiao, whose players appear ready to go to war for him or at least punch somebody in the groin if that is what he asked of them.

    Guiao’s Red Bull Barakos are as tough as their coach and adopts a take-no-prisoners approach to every game. They’re a throwback team to the time when an elbow to the ribs is as much part of the game as boxing out to get rebounds.

    Air21, on the other hand, has benefitted from addition by subtraction. Without the towering, but leaden-footed De Ocampo, the Air21 offense always comes flying out of the starting gates. And in shipping out Ferriols, Ritualo and Washington other players have stepped up to take on leadership roles in the squad.

    KG Canaleta has become almost as good a shooter as Ritualo. He also packages a slam-dunking flamboyant offensive game and is a suffocating defender. Homer Se is a faster, more mobile (and more mean-spirited) big man than Ferriols. And Arwind Santos combines frightening athleticism and a confident, domineering attitude that the more laid back Washington never had.

    I am not so arrogant that I can’t admit that I was dead wrong about my assessment of those two teams. They are where they are because of careful planning and nurturing. They deserve to be where they are and either team look ready to win the 2008 Fiesta Conference crown.

    Saka saan naman yun maiinjured? Mukhangang wala sa vocabulary niya ang salitang ‘injury.’ Hindi naman siya mahilig magdunk… kaya malayo yun sa injury..
