David sends Air21 to ‘cloud 9′ by 1

GARY David made the first charity and wisely missed the other when it mattered most.
David piled up 13 of his 25 points in the final canto, including the game-winning free throw with 1.5 ticks left, to help the Air21 Express squeak past the Talk ‘N Text Phone Pals, 112-111, in the 33rd Smart Fiesta Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome Friday night.
Showing an endgame poise, the Express overcame a four-point deficit, 107-111 in the final minute when they tied it at 111-all with 15 ticks left after import Steve Thomas converted two offensive rebounds to two important put backs.
David, through Air21’s suffocating trapping defense, snatched a pivotal possession from Renren Ritualo after a Talk ‘N Text’s timeout and sped up down court to try to finish a potential game-winning lay-up but was fouled by the former Express player.
David, with only 1.5 ticks remaining on the clock, hit the first game-winning free throw but decided to bungle the other as time expired, and the Air21 Express reached nine victories against six losses to stay in the third place.
Just missed it
Asked if he intentionally missed his last free throw, David said: “Yes that’s the best way to do in that kind of situation because Talk ‘N Text has a chance to call a timeout if I will make both and it could set a play even in a second to go.”
David, who amazingly saved the Express from another defeat, made 3-of-6 attempts in the three-point zone, hit 6-of-9 in the field and sank 4-of-6 shots in the foul line to also help his team to bounce back from a narrow 84-86 loss to Alaska last June 6.
“That’s I always remind them about their big fighting heart and Gary (David) is really incredible tonight,” said Air21 mentor Bo Perasol. “It is not the way they started it but the way they finished it is something more important. It’s the never-say-die attitude.”
Air21’s reinforcement Steve Thomas, who is second in scoring (23.9 points per game) and third in rebounding (16.8) among imports after nine games, unloaded 16 of his 23 points in the second half in addition to his 17 rebounds and six assists.
‘Believe’
“I did my job and I believe we can make it,” said 6-foot-9 Thomas, who finished with 10-of-25 attempts in the field and three free throws to match the 29 points and 12 rebounds output of Talk ‘N Text debuting new import Terrence Leather.
Leather replaced Talk ‘N Text previous import Aaron McGhee.
Talk ‘N Text could not protect its advantage in the first three quarters, where they ahead by 28-24, 57-50 at half and 87-83 in third, due to Air21’s searing second half surge and consistent shooting beyond the arc and from the field.
In fact, the Phone Pals established a 10-point advantage twice (46-36 and 53-43) in the second quarter, and they even also led by nine in the third quarter twice (69-60 and 71-62), but the Express unleashed a 15-4 assault to seize the edge, 77-75, with 4:08 left.
Starting point guard Wynne Arboleda’s jumper made that first lead happen, while Ranidel De Ocampo made two treys and Niño KG Canaleta added one in that run.
Loss opportunity
Talk ‘N Text, wasting another opportunity that could make them rip the game wide open, took a 97-89 lead as Leather scored on jumper with 8:12 left in the last canto, but David came up scorching with seven straight points and Thomas tied it at 98-all with 4:33 left.
De Ocampo, who got 15 points on 3-of-5 shooting in the three-point zone along with six boards and four assists, gave the Express a slim 103-102 lead with 2:57 left, when he tipped in Thomas’ miss attempt.
A 7-0 spurt by Talk ‘N Text, capped by Alapag’s triple, provided them a 108-103 edge with 1:41 to go, but De Ocampo and Santos hit basket each to slice it 107-108 before another Alapag trey came in to give the Phone Pals a 111-107 lead with 56 ticks left.
Thomas rescued the Express, making two put backs that knotted the count to 111-all.
Then, defense and David’s single charity with 1.5 second left had stretched Talk ‘N Text’s woes after suffering its five straight defeats to fall to 6-7 log.
Usual average
Slam-dunk artist Niño KG Canaleta, after performing low from his usual average in the last two games, scattered 20 points, including 12 in the third period, while Homer Se finished with eight ponts and 11 rebounds.
Canaleta has averaged 9.2 points per game in the last 15 outings.
Arboleda and Arwind Santos combined for 14 points for the Express, who hit 12 three-pointers against the nine of the Phone Pals.
The Express shot miserably in the first half, making only 37.3% percent against 45.5% in the field. But they responded well in the second half by outscoring them in the third (33-30) and fourth quarter (29-24) to steal the win.
Air21 claimed 25 points on Talk ‘N Text’s 23 turnovers, while the Express took more fast break points (15-13) and second chance points (16-15) against the Phone Pals.
Both teams collared 52 rebounds. 
“We’ll try to make it 10 in our next game and I think we would already be safe at least in the quarters,” said Perasol after the win that firmed up their hold of third place behind co-leaders Coca-Cola (9-5) and Red Bull (9-5).
Veteran Jimmy Alapag scored 19 points and dished out 10 assists with five rebounds for Talk ‘N Text.

….Air21 also avenged its first round loss against Talk ‘N Text last April 22, 2008, 116-99, after the Express allowed the Phone Pals to break Presto’s 1989 record for most numbers of triple made when they fired 23 to erase the previous 18 treys…
…. It seems Terrence Leather is adjusting to the pro league’s rules after committing four travelling violations… But definitely thanks to the Express defense at the post…
…David struggled in the early part of the game and signed of disappointment shown in his face. But after he came back early in the fourth quarter, David had fire on his eyes that set the tone of the Express’ comeback….
….For the second time, Air21 fans filled the astrodome with violet baloons. Fans were screaming everytime the Express made a run particulalrly in the endgame when David completed the tap of Santos….

GARY showed a LOT of confidence last night (after being fouled by renren in the last 1.5 seconds) when he joined the Express in wild jubilation… para lang siyang nasa sideline na tuwang-tuwa, to think siya ang mag pa-foul throw… Masaya siya dahil alam niya na siguradong makaka-shoot and magpa-foul throw, which is SIYA!
What a CONFIDENCE… Nerve of Steel!

Actually, dun nagsimula ang career ni David sa NCRAA… Isa lamang siyang walk-in sa try-out nang pakitaan niya ang Lyceum at si coach Leo Austria…
Hindi nagdalawang isip si Austria ng tanggihan niya yung ibang players na matatangkad ng kinuha yung slot kay David…
Sa NCRAA din pinakita ni Gary na umiiskor siya ng 35 points pataas… after that, marami ng nagkainteres sa kanya sa PBL at kinuha siya ng Montana…
After injury, nag MVP si David… And I think, he will do it also here in the big league…
Sa ngayon there are many teams ang nanghihinayang dahil pinalagpas nila si David during 2004 draft kinuha siya pangsampu ng Coca-Cola then later on pinamigay din kapalit ni Dale Singson — asa na ngayon si Dale?

Oh, Homer Se at it again?

New Talk n Text import Terrence Leather and Air21 bruiser Homer Se figured in a near brawl as they chanced upon each other at the Cuneta Astrodome parking lot a few minutes after their highly charged duel in the Smart PBA Fiesta Conference Friday night.
The Express overcame a four-point deficit in the last 56 seconds to pull off a 112-111 shocker and enhance their bid for an outright semifinals entry in the tourney.
The fateful evening also saw Purefoods’ Marc Pingris go after debuting Sta. Lucia import Benson Lee after a rebounding collision in their own game.
PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios is expected to investigate the two incidents, specially the Leather-Se confrontation witnessed by a score of fans awaiting the players at the VIP gate.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola and Red Bull take on Ginebra and Purefoods, respectively, at the resumption of play at the Araneta Coliseum today, both seeking a win that will assure them of a playoff crack at an outright quarterfinals berth.
The Tigers and the Kings slug it out at 4:30 p.m. then the Bulls and the Giants square off at 6:50 p.m. Coke and Red Bull both gun for a 10th win in 15 games while the Kings and the Giants go for a seventh win against eight losses.
Batang Alaska-Caloocan and Batang Talk n Text-Quezon City clash in the finale of the Burlington-Batang PBA Summer League at 1:30 p.m. also at the Big Dome.
Witnesses said Leather and Se engaged in a verbal tussle, flashed dirty-finger at each other but were separated even before they could trade blows.
“Homer told me about the incident. He said he won’t start it, aware of his past cases and a consequence of another case,” said Air21 coach Bo Perasol.
The Air21 mentor thought Leather really looked for Se and confronted him for an old score.
“We’d played Leather in China. It so happened that one of Leather’s teammates took a bad fall incidentally because of Homer. The player failed to finish the game,” said Perasol.
“Reviewing the (Talk n Text-Air21 game) tape, I noticed Leather looking for someone on our bench after the game. He must have been already after Homer then,” Perasol added.
Se has just been assessed a P20,000 fine by the Commissioner’s Office for a misconduct in their game against Sta. Lucia Realty last June 1.
Review of the tape saw Se plant a knee on Kelly Williams’ face as the latter was struggling on the floor with Air21 guard Wynne Arboleda. Se then flailed his arms, in the process hitting Ryan Reyes on the face when Reyes and Jamar Brown tried to hold him off.
That was the ninth time already that Se has been sanctioned for misconduct in his PBA career. The former San Sebastian Stag has been assessed P95,000 in fines and two games suspension on his previous offenses.

madaya talaga yung t’foul kay se, wala nga siya ginawa eh… at lokong leather yun, nakigamit na nga lang ng twalya kay Kramer, tinapon pa sa sahig yung towel, nagalit tuloy si Se… that incident simply shows ayaw ni Homer Se na naaagrabyado or inaapi ang mga kakampi niya…

Gud Luck with your game on Wednesday versus WELCOAT , Di ko ina under etimate ang WELCOAT , pero kailangan nating mag ingat with them , pwede nila tayong talunin . So we need to focus on Defense .Limit them to 90 on their score and let us force them to commit turn over by applying pressure DEFENSE .

Do you smell what the standings cookin?!? Congrats sa team Air21, that’s the real spirit. Hard work and teamwork. Di mahalaga kung sino maka-score, mga kaibigan ang importanate lahat nag-contribute at nanalo ang team, yung mga off-nights nangyayari po talaga yan kaya okey lang yun.
