Egay delivers as Air21 surges to 7th win

IT WAS not Niño Canaleta who took care of the business but somebody who is shorter.
Back-up playmaker Egay Billiones waxed hot in the final canto as the Air21 Express exacted revenge against the Red Bull Barakos, 119-109, for seventh victory after 12 games in the 33rd PBA Smart Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Billiones, a back-up playmaker to starting point guard Wynne Arboleda, sizzled with 17 of his career-high 23 points in the fourth quarter, including four crucial triples in that span, to help the Express reach the 7-5 win-loss mark.
Talk ‘N Text, Red Bull and Air21 are now tied in the No. 2 to 4 spots with same 7-5 card.
“It’s just a matter of confidence everytime I step up in the court at any given night,” said the Billiones, 32, who recorded 4-of-5 beyond the arc, shot a perfect 4-of-4 in the field and made 3-of-4 in the foul line. “My teammates also did their shares also.”
Blitzing
From a 100-109 fourth quarter deficit, Red Bull trimmed down the gap to just 109-113 with 1:41 remaining after unleashing a blitzing 9-4 burst capped by 6’9 Mick Pennisi’s three-point shot.
But the Barakos fumbled under the last 1:30 mark, committing two crucial errors – inbound violation on Parada and illegal pick on Ybañez – that cost them their third straight loss to fall to 7-5 card.
The Express capitalized on those turnovers, with Ranidel De Ocampo and Billiones hitting a triple each to seal all things.
“What can I say Egay (Billiones) deliver the good for us,” said Air21 mentor Bo Perasol. “Our defense was not that good but our offense made us win tonight. I haven’t seen the stats yet but I think we made good shooting percentage.”
Last year’s team leading scorer spitfire Gary David, who fully recovered from a recent ACL injury, kept his double-digit scoring when he poured in 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting in the field and converted all six free throws along with five assists.
Bounce back
Air21 took charge in the first quarter, posting a 31-19 lead with 1:27 to go after Arboleda’s triple.
The Express closed the opening frame ahead, 31-23, behind Santos, Thomas and Arboleda who merged for 21 points in first quarter.
But the Barakos of head coach Yeng Guiao attampted to bounce back, reducing the deficit at halftime, 54-58, after making a 31-27 attack in the second quarter.
David stole the limelight in the third quarter by scoring 12 points there, including three straight baskets to put the Express ahead, 78-66, with 4:01 to go.
Then, Francis Adriano’s five straight points sliced the deficit to only 77-84 with 1:21 to go.
Forward Ranidel De Ocampo, who hit 12 points on 2-of-3 beyond the arc, delivered a stab and sophomore 6-foot-4 Arwind Santos, who nailed 17 points and hauled nine boards, brought back the advantage to double-digit, 90-80, with 53 ticks to go.
Doused-off
In the fourth quarter, Air21 relied heavily on Egay Billiones’ fourth quarter heroics where he doused-off Red Bulls’ rally with driving baskets, quick shots and triples to hand them a 109-100 lead with 3:42 left.
From thereon, the Air21 Express never relinquished their edge.
6-foot-9 Steve Thomas threw his weight around Red Bulls’ frontline by tallying in 19 points along with 13 rebounds and five assists, while Wynne Arboleda finished with 11 points and Homer Se added eight points and seven boards.
Niño Canaleta, who was suspended for a game after committing a flagrant foul penalty 2 infraction last April 4 against Red Bull, said he is satisfied with the win despite scoring only five points but grabbed five rebounds and swatted three enemy shots.
“I’m not thinking about it anymore,” said Canaleta, referring to the Express’ 92-102 loss against the Barakos. “All we need is to get back at them and then beat our next opponent.”
Fast Break points
Air21 got 33 points on Red Bulls’ 23 turnovers and also had more fast break points compared to the Barakos, 24-14. The Express shot 43-out-of-85 (50.6%) against the Barakos’ 42-out-of-81 (51.9%) total field goals.
They nailed 23-out-30 free throws against the Barakos’ 15-of-25.
Air21 got more rebounds than Red Bull, 49-40.
7-footer import Adam Parada scored big for Red Bull with 28 points along with 12 rebounds and four blocks, while teammate Cyrus Baguio added 18 points and Mick Pennisi contributed 16 points.

…Billones’ previous career-high was 21 which he recorded twice – the first on April 4, 2003 with FedEx in a 95-93 loss to Alaska in the All-Filipino Cup and the recent Talk ‘N Text in Game 5 of last season’s Fiesta Conference Finals against Alaska….
…..The total output of Air2 also matched its season-high in a 119-110 win during the wild card stage of last conference (Philippine Cup) against Ginebra.

Napatayo ako ng ipasa ni egay yung bola kay Ranidel at nakaready na yung suntok ko sa hangin… At di ako nagkamali, pasok nga… nagtatalon ako sa saya grabe,… clutch basket yun… tapos di pa ko tapos kakatalon, may pumito, turn over pala ng red bull, talon ulit… Sandali ulit akong naupo then suddenly egay pulled up another trey and kaboom! lalo pa tumaas yung talon ko…. grabe…. tapos pumito ref at another turnover…. yahoo, panalo na kako!
Grabe, tama si coach Bo, opensa nagpanalo sa kanila ngayon, although yung depensa nila, andun, pero matindi din red bull… kaya yung skills nila sa opensa ang nagpanalo… less forced shots, fastbreak, moments of game brilliance, and agrsivnes towards the basket, and assists pa pala… that’s the air21 offense edition PLUS! haha! astig

wag tayo magmalinis guys, even our team may anumalya pero sa loob mismo ng team… kasi kapag may trades, parang may involved na pera, ewan ko kung totoo pero marami nagsasabi na ganun nga… kapag nagtrade ang management or nagpamigay ng player, may kapalit na pera instead of a player in return… or yung makukuha natin is mababang klaseng player plus pera kapalit ang mas magaling nating player…
si dimaunahan, andaya, chia, yancy, pinamigay natin na masyadong halatang may something wrong… sa trade naman, why did they picked washington and Cardona tapos ittrade lang din pala for Yancy and Fran… Tapos, si Aljamal, kinuha natin tapos pinamigay ulit sa TNT for another pick… eh di sana ibinigay na natin yung pick natin agad sa TNT kung di rin lang natin papipirmahin si Aljamal di ba? parang may money involved na naman dun…. Pero i don’t think binabayaran natin yung PBA to change something…
And di rin ako naniniwala na binayaran ng SLR ang PBA para magchampion sila… Talaga lang magaling SLR last conference… Kung tutuusin, pabor pa sa purefoods yun kasi di ba suspended dapat si Yap ng game 4 kasi flagrant penalty 2 siya nung game 3? Sa halip pinaglaro siya ng PBA sa game 4 kasi 2-1 ang series at lamang ang SLR so kapag nasuspend si Yap ng game 4, malamang panal SLR at magiging 3-1 at mahihirapan ng humabol ang purefoods na humabol… and eventually nanalo nga ang purefoods sa game 4 para maging tied ang series dahil nga naglaro si Yap, isinabay na lang yung suspension ni Yap kay Yeo sa Game 5 para magmukhang patas lang ang labanan…
God bless sa express bukas, depensahan nyo yung import at si Williams… AND INGAT tayo sa opensa natin kasi deffensive team ang SLR… Si Ryan Reyes, napaka energetic, so wag magpapatalo ang guards…

Air21 may not be a tough team for the SLR but they are just so driven by their perseverance which makes them one of the best team in the league…
All i know is the Express is a young team with a huge future in front of them they don’t have a K Will but we they have the “spider-man” and other players who CONTRIBUTES WELL…

Sir Josef, kaunting update naman po sa website, i got the result from PBA website but only the game result 95-93 in favor of Air21 Express, wala parin score box kaya di ko makita yung statistics. “PURE ENERGY” Gary David did very well, he has 22 points nga ehhh ayos rin yung mga 3’s nya!!! He did it na naman showing the opponents na di purket na-injure siya ay bumaba yung level of play niya!!!
“NO DOUBT” Steven Thomas did very very very good Thomas really rocks, he may not be as tall as Parada or Alexander but he delivers very well for the Express which makes him the best import for ME… May sakit pa nga yun eh!!!!

“AMAZING” Arwind “the spider-man” Santos carried the Express well… WOw akala ko talaga matatalo na naman tayo against SLR but guess who stepped up when the team is in the pinch its Arwind… WOW nashoot niya yung 3 from a far distance?! sending the game to an OT his just simply “AMAZING”

AIR21 coach Bo Perasol is not one to be overly concerned when his team trails early.
“Starting out lousy is nothing but finishing strong. It will be the win that counts,” he reasoned.
And that’s precisely what the Express did in overcoming an early 18-point deficit to beat the Sta. Lucia Realtors 95-93 in overtime Sunday in the 2008 Smart PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Despite a bout with the flu, Steven Thomas came up with 24 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists for the season’s first triple double while Arwind Santos and Gary David came up with the crucial points that made the victory possible.
“I told them that it’s going to be their heart, composure that are going to count in overtime and those did,” related Perasol after his team won a second straight game and improved its win-loss record to 8-5 and a tie with Red Bull at second, just half a game behind league-leading Coca-Cola..
The positive traits Perasol talked about surfaced in the tenser minutes of the extension after both teams finished regulation locked at 86.
Santos’ triple gave him 20 for the game and Air21 a 91-89 edge, and David’s clutch free throws put the Express ahead to stay, 93-91, 1:16 to go.
The shooting woes that hounded SLR in regulation spilled over into OT as Jamar Brown and Dennis Espino missed from underneath while Dennis Miranda traveled, leading to David capping his own 24-point performance with two more charities that made it a safer 95-91 game.
Williams still led SLR with 27 points and seven rebounds while Brown, who arrived only last Friday, showed some side effects of jetlag just setting in with 14 points and 24 boards.
Williams’ dunk opened scoring in the extension and Brown completed a woeful 4-of-12 stint from the stripe with a charity split that made it an 89-88 count.
Then came Santos’ dagger of a trey and SLR’s virtual collapse in the homestretch.
Reyes played almost brilliantly in the closing minute of regulation, scoring off Williams’ feed to give his team the upper hand and following that up with two free throws to make it an 86-83 count, 45 ticks left.
But he failed to become the outright hero when he bungled two charities that could have iced it, leading to Santos’ game-tying triple. And he almost became the goat when his passing error led to an Air21 possession in the final two seconds.
Good thing Santos missed a desperate heave from just beyond midcourt.
Sta. Lucia could consider itself lucky to have survived the quarter as it made only two of 14 shots and only stayed afloat through 10-of-16 free throw shooting.
Tempers started to flare after Wynne Arboleda tied up Williams following a steal try, 4:47 to go in the third. The SLR forward reacted negatively to Arboleda by sneaking in what looked like a punch while Homer Se got into the act by visibly planting a knee on the fallen Williams’ face and then hitting Reyes on the face with his left hand when the rookie reacted to the veteran center’s obvious foul.
The referees, however, prevented the situation from getting out of hand and sort of evened up matters by assessing Williams with a technical for a second motion on Arboleda and Se with a flagrant foul-penalty one for the knee.
The incident seemed to fire up the Realtors even more and they padded what was a 57-53 lead to 72-64 going into the final quarter. Williams scored six of his 12 quarter points in that stretch.
The virtual shootout between Williams and David first took shape in the second quarter as they came up with the points that propped their respective teams the most.
Williams scattered nine of his 11 first half points in the period, six coming during a 14-4 surge that staked his team to a 36-18 spread, 6:29 to go. Then it was David’s turn, spreading out the bulk of his 10 quarter points in keeping his team within reach and keep it close, 36-43, at the turn. (NCo)
