KG’s Big 4th Q Scoring gives Air21 ‘V’

STEVE Thomas didn’t score that much.

No problem.

Niño KG Canaleta came up with an explosive fourth quarter performance Friday night to fuel the Air21 Express’ 104-86 victory over the Coca-Cola Tigers for fifth win in the 33rd Smart-PBA Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.

6-foot-6 Canaleta, after scoring only 10 points in the first three periods, buckled down to work immediately in payoff frame to torch the Tigers with 19 of his personal conference-high 29 points to help the Express climb at the fifth spot with 5-4 card.

“There are games that you can’t make a shot, even a single one, but tonight it is really unbelievable,” said Canaleta, who shot a perfect 5-of-5 in the three-point territory and finished 4-of-5 in the field. “It is exactly a memorable game.”

Thomas, who currently ranks No. 1 in scoring (26.1points per game) due to the departure of explosive import Darius Rice of Purefoods, made only a conference low 11 points – 10 in the first half – but grabbed 20 rebounds and listed three blocks.

Give Way

“I must give way to the other guy like KG and Ranidel because they are very amazing tonight but somehow I made my own contribution,” said Thomas. “Getting rebounds and blocking enemy shots are my specialty since college days.”

Forward Ranidel De Ocampo, who tallied 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting in the field and amassed six boards, scattered 11 points, mostly in shaded area, in the third quarter as the Express outscored the Tigers in that span, 29-25, for a slim 71-65 lead.

Coca-Cola sliced Air21’s lead early in the first minute of the last quarter as point guard Alex Cabagnot drained a trey at the left corner, followed by Buenafe’s two free throws, to come within 70-71 with still 10:50 to go.

But the Express, with Canaleta scoring baskets after baskets, doused off the Tigers’ rally with a blitzing 16-3 burst to pull-off their biggest edge in the game, 90-73, with 7:17 left after Arwind Santos’ three-point play.

Shy

Canaleta, who was only three points shy in tying his career-high 32 points last October 14 Philippine Cup in a loss to Magnolia, had 10 points in that rally.

The Tigers managed to trim the deficit to 86-98 with 3:06 remaining after Cabagnot’s triple, but that was the nearest they reach under the three-minute mark, as the Express controlled the game the rest of the way.

“I’ve been waiting for a game like this from KG, a breakout game like this one,” Air21 coach Bo Perasol said. “And this was a game where he played both offense and defense. He showed that he can be one of the premiere players in this league.”

“This is a team effort but every time Coke made a run (in the fourth quarter) KG made a stop to that run,” he said.

Impressive

Last year’s best defensive player Gary David unleashed another impressive game off the bench, contributing 10 points on 2-of-3 sniping beyond the arc. Sophomore Arwind Santos finished with eight points and five rebounds.

Coca-Cola, with the loss, fell to third position with 6-4 slot. It was the Tigers first second straight loss this conference.

Playmaker Wynne Arboleda and Egay Billiones had seven points each.

After being outscored in the first quarter, 20-26, the Express battled back in the second quarter by delivering a 22-14 run to seize the halftime edge at 42-40.

A very huge second half scoring by the Air21 Express erased all hopes for the Coca-Cola Tigers particularly in the final quarter, where they tallied 33-21, including the finishing kick – the huge 19 fourth quarter points of Canaleta.

The 19 points of the former University of the East forward was also the most by any local player in a quarter this conference.

Key

Gang rebounding plus big time scoring was absolutely the key.

Air21 collected 48 rebounds against the only 38 of Coca-Cola, which paraded by towering locals Taulava, Nic Belasco and Mark Telan.

The Express, who also had six blocks, registered 40-of-81 (49.4%) total field goals against the 35-of-81 (43.2%) of the Tigers.

The Tigers’ two imports struggled as Jason Dixon converted just 7-of-14 to finish with 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Gee Gervin was limited to 10 on 5-of-12 from the field.

Rookie guard Ronjay Buenafe had 14 points while playmaker Alex Cabagnot added 13 and Paul Asi Taulava had 12 with nine boards for the Tigers.

Air21 Blog Notes:

Canaleta went to the press table along with coach Bo… and couldn’t utter even a single word… “Maybe I’m just your ordinary simple guy but not a celebrity,” he said to me…

Canaleta’s performance also impressed several foreign scouts from Korea and Tony Lang, the one-time Red Bull Best Import winner who powered the Red Bull to the 2001 Commissioner’s Cup title…

Lang, who starred for the Duke Blue Devils in the early 90s, is currently a scout for Nagoya’s professional team in the Japan Basketball League (JBL).

“Wow I like the way he plays,” said Lang in an impromptu interview. “He is comfortable playing the guard and wing position. He can also shoot outside.”

Though, no words have had brought up if they will tap Canaleta to play for Japan…

Prior to the game, the three-time slam dunk champion averaged only 9.3 points per game…

Probably one of this week’s highlight reel – Marvin Cruz’s no-look pass to Canaleta for the tomahawk jam…

Night after night, KG admitted he reads this site…

Probably, the thousand critics on this site make him strong and brave to prove that he can carry the Express, not only in this game but also for the coming games…

Lito Alvarez, the team’s governor, congratulated the players for a job well done…

….Rookie JC Intal sat on the bench… Good news: His skin condition problem is now starting heal… He expected to return anytime this month unless his dermatologist ask him not….

Individual Scores:

Air 21 104 — Canaleta 29, De Ocampo 21, Thomas 11, David 10, Santos 8, Billones 7, Arboleda 7, Se 6, Sotto 3, Cruz 2, Kramer 0.

Coke 86 — Dixon 15, Buenafe 14, Cabagnot 13, Taulava 12, Gervin 10, Belasco 7, Macapagal 6, Telan 4, Catli 3, Dimaunahan 2.

ei josef.. i often watch their game, i’m wondering kung ikaw ung guy na laging may hawak ng recorder.. hehehe.. i often see him kc sa game ng air.. wala lang just asking..

  • noname Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 7:53 am

  • idol Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 9:29 am

keep it up KG and ALSO to GARY DAVID,ARWIND SANTOS,RANIDEL and ARBOLEDA sana galingan nyo 5 dahil kayo ang pag asa ng air21 para maka punta ng FINALS at maging CHAMPION!!

  • jmarc Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 9:50 am

At importante nagawa nya iba facet ng game…to help the team win.
Gary d 2nd game na nagpapakita ng ganyang kakayahan kahit wala pa 100%…lots of things to look forward to.
Homer maganda talaga pinapakita.

  • jimmuel Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 10:10 am

    aba…5-4 n tyo?
    alright

  • neil Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 10:17 am

well, wag tayo manghinayang sa performance ni Arwind kasi maganda pa rin laro niya, nabawasan man ang touches niya, nakikita naman yung hustle niya at iiskor pa rin siya kung kinakailangan… I’m so happy na nakikita kong nagpapasahan si KG at Arwind na pareho ang position, napatunayan natin na hindi nagkakainggitan ang dalawa tulad ng rumors dati na may gustong umalis sa dalawa dahil nagkakasapawan lang sila… kita nyo naman, pag off ang isa sa kanila, maganda laro nung isa, how much more kapag parehong nag-init di ba? so pls, wag nyo i-trade si KG at Arwind…

to KG, huwaw, that’s the real YOU! nakadalawang dunk ka pa… and yung mga tres mo eh hndi pilit kaya naman pumapasok… nice shot selections,, and namamasa ka na rin… keep it up the da vinci of dunk…

I know kaya niyo yan, wag lang kayo ma-out of focus… God bless you all!

  • torch Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 10:23 am

  • 10thsense Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 11:39 am

C’mon KG! Keep it up! Keep doin what you doin. You’re one of the most exciting players on this league now. And you will be one of the best if you always bring your A game.

  • murdoc Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 2:12 pm

Magnifico.

Kay Arwind, medyo diyeta sa scoring pero big factor parin yung pagiging defensive minded nya kapag off sa opensa, time will come again for you kapag bumulusok ulit ang solid game mo, tapos nandyan pa ang outstanding performance and fab 5 ng Air21, astig yun.

Keep it up.

  • murdoc Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 2:13 pm

  • josef Ramos Saturday, 17 May 2008 at 3:00 pm

Pero from the comments I’ve read here, mukhang they had a superb game that night. Sana pag nanood ako ng susunod na laro nila eh ganyan uli gawin nila. Sana hindi ako malasin.

  • jmarc Sunday, 18 May 2008 at 11:25 pm

Don’t you think na it adds color to the site, dito sa mga post natin? at least may interaction mga fans dibah? Okay lang ang comment mo sa akin…regarding Mike of Kuwait…I know and a lot of people would agree that he has some axe to grind on certain goings on with the team…attorney ka ba nya? eh kung si Mike of Kuwait nga di masyado nag rereact at may healthy na batuhan din naman kami ng mga comments kaya okay lang diba? On certain post nman I agree to his views, and I would also respect his views on certain topic and would react on what I feel to his comments…just like what I’m doing to your commments…sa last post ko kung saan ka nag react 90% is on the team, on their great job against Coke…intro lang nga yung pinag rereactan mo…anyway totoo naman ang mga obserbasyon ko, pansisnin mo? Tama naman diba? Kaya nga ang advocacy ko sa site eh support for the team manalo at matalo, mahaba na may saysay ang post pag talo pati pag panalo.Isa pa gusto ko mangyari eh magkaroon nga ng fans day ang team, sempre with the support of management na pwede i lakad ni pafa josef…at ang pagkakaroon pa rin ng EXPRESS DANCERS…o di kaya magkaroon ng mascot na nag tatrampoline dunk(like in the NBA)…bigyan na din natin sya ng pangalan…”JET”, pwede rin si “ROCKET”…kayo, bigay kayo suggestions….kung mangyayari yan tayo una dyan, bagay pa sa image ng team na EXpress!!!!!WATCHA THINK FANS?…NEIL….hahahaaheheheh!

  • stranger_maian Monday, 19 May 2008 at 9:18 pm

thanks sa info josef.. noticeable kasi siya.. sabi nga ni noname pag my celebrity andun siya.. tsaka mdjo weird kasi lagi ngang may recorder.. tlaga binabasa ni kg toh? sana leave din siya ng message.. hekhek.. basta ayusin lang ng air ang defense at team work mas gaganda pa game nila..gary’s picking up, si arwind naman kahit di masyado sa points hanep naman sa rebound diba? babawi din yan.. kg is doing a great job, ituloy2 lang..homer my kababayan is fantastic..ranidel and wynne are the catalyst of air (my opinion)..si doug and marvin laking tulong din sa team..sana gumaling na si jc para makatulong din.. si steve siyempre malaking tulong.. di naman kailangan ng trade para lumakas ung team kasi dati na naman silang malakas, kailangan lang mag improve ng unte.. magaling si coach bo, magaling mga players.. kaya yan..

  • Kazuki Monday, 19 May 2008 at 10:39 pm

Syang kc si Jc intal l ng playing tyme… hirap naman kc cna kg arwind at ranidel pag sabay sabay lging may isang offnight… ngaun ok tau pano pag all filipino la nang import.. wala nman big-man sa draft… syang dpat makuha na si eman hbang mababa pa ang presyo… eman o dorian pena.. rebounder center outside 4 slasher 3 versitile 2 defensive 1.. un dpat ang combo maraming makukuhang player sa magnolia willing clang magbigay bsta lumaks ang ginebra…

  • alonezzz Monday, 19 May 2008 at 10:43 pm

hmmmmm oi quesofreak watch ur words! coach Bo is trying his best for the team so please respect him…

compared sa atin mas may nalalaman nmn sya…

i think there is no need for us to trade as of the moment, kasi maganda nmn performance ng lahat lalo na si homer which i think is the best conference he has played…

for Arwind naman ehhhh di sya masyado nakakakuha ng touches but ayos lng yon kasi ang LUPIT rin naman niya sa defensive side… and i think naninibago lang siya sa role nya now sa team kasi nga may MALUPIT taung import so he has to be in a 2 guard position somtimes…

Thomas i think is one of the best imports this confe aside from of course the giant Parada, no need for us to find another import kahit na may mga 7 footer na ang ibang team… Thomas leads in field goal percentage coz of his wise shot selections…

IN SHORT, THE EXPRESS HAS A CHANCE TO WIN THIS CONFERENCE!!!!

    GO GO GO!!!

  • stranger_maian Monday, 19 May 2008 at 10:53 pm

  • gibz24 Monday, 19 May 2008 at 10:55 pm

yah meh punto ka jan Kazuki.. tama pano next conference? well para sakin they have to get a player WISELY whether from a trade or draft.. sa trade wla pa ako maicp kc lhat nmn ngaun nagsstep up xempre kelangan nga punan ung slot ni Steve Thomas.. kung sa draft e1 ko lng rin c edwin asoro cguro kaso anu height nya? lam nyo? atska pde na ba cya idraft? xensa na di ako mxdo updated sa amateur league

observation lng ha… prng mrami ng nagccoment d2 sa site natin ah mukang ndami na nga fans ng express.. request lng.. pde wak tau pplit palit ng name d2 pra nllamn natin kung kni knino tlga nanggling ung sari saring saloobin.. hehe la lng

    God bless satin..

To: Quezo… Brad pls watch your word I already deleted the comment of the guy… Sensya na now lang me nag log in…

Pede mo naman sabihin if hindi siya magaling na coach but you can’t tell it that way…

    Bawal yan… Please wag ganun…

At sayo kazuke, that’s only a dream of other team managers… Hindi magkakatotoo yung trade mo…

  • stranger_maian Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 12:50 am

    tama diba josef?

Edwin Asuro is good in the amateur league but di na man kasi siya ganun kalaki for me, d best choice if ever is gabe norwood but marami ring maghahabol dun…

if draft ang pag-uusapan i think si mark borboran is a good choice big man siya na nakakatakbo talaga pwede rin si kelvin gregorio…

    wat u think guys?

  • torch Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 7:23 pm

C JERVY CRUZ MAGALING DIN UN

  • josef ramos Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 7:33 pm

I go for Jason Castro whatever happens even he has a committment on NBL…

Castro’s playmaking skills and decision-makings are what the team really needs…

At the same time, Jerby Cruz is also a good choice… But we look for other big man who can run and has a post threat.

    If Sotto improves, that’s good…

On Norwood, he is not what the doctor’s prescribe due to the presence of David, Santos and KG, but we will see…

If he plays point guard, that would be fine.

  • gibz24 Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 8:02 pm

hehe i cant imagine 3 big men running the fastbreak in PBA.. Santos, Canaleta, n Norwood ^_^

  • alonezzz Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 10:15 pm

hmmmmm now that you’ve mention it if we draft Norwood there will be a hard time rotating KG, Arwind, and Gabe so i was mistaken that time…

about Jason Castro, hmmmmm good choice sir josef i totally get your point and we have to admit Castro’s play making skills are in different level…

Jervy Cruz is fine but i think he won’t be of a post threat…

but still i would like to go for Borboran…

  • noname Tuesday, 20 May 2008 at 10:44 pm

  • josef ramos Wednesday, 21 May 2008 at 3:22 am

Well, if you go for Borboran, I rather go for Norwood because Borboran plays only No. 2 and No. 3 position which the Express have a lot of options.

Norwood can play multiple positions from 1-3… Actually he is a natural point guard…

But I still go for Jason Castro talent wise…

Anyway, if we need a big man… I think we can tap in the free agent pool…

There are many big men there.. I think 6′7 Philip Butel is good for the team and I’m sure the Realtors might release him…

This guy can run, gets some rebound, a brave defender, and can score inside..

A role player that can fit to the team’s system.

  • gibz24 Wednesday, 21 May 2008 at 9:01 am

    c marlou!! hehe jowk lng…
