Thomas, Arboleda power Air21 Express
by Josef RamosSaturday, 3 May 2008 (761 Views, 36 Comments)
IT LOOKS like Steve Thomas really likes the way Wynne Arboleda runs Air21’s play.
In fact, both of them stole the show last Friday from other teammates.
6-foot-9 hulking import Thomas and point guard Arboleda turned the Air21 Express to an invincible force, shattering the defending champion Alaska Aces into tiny pieces, 86-79, for third win in the 33rd PBA Smart Fiesta Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Alaska Aces, playing without 6-foot-8 import Randy Holcomb, struggled most of the time especially from the beginning and the Air21 Express tied the Magnolia Beverage Masters to fifth and sixth place with identical 3-3 record.
Suspended
Holcomb was suspended for one-game and fined P20, 000 due to the flagrant foul penalty two slapped by PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios after hitting Rich Alvarez of Red Bull with a clothesline with just 10 ticks left in the game last April 19 in Laoag City.
Red Bull won that game, 100-97.
“It is a struggle to combine both, being a fast team and play defense,” said Air21 head coach Bo Perasol. “The challenge is how to limit our opponents to less than 100 points for us to win and we did that in this game.”
The Express have practically learned something from a bitter experience last April 23, where they allowed Talk ‘N Text to score 116-99 win against them, which included a record-breaking 23-out-of-39 shooting beyond the three-point area.
Philosophy
“We’re struggling a bit in our (defensive) philosophy right now,” he said. “But we need to be defensive-minded to improve our standing. We have to incorporate the hard work entailed by being defensive and, at the same time, not letting up on our offense.”
Playmaker Wynne Arboleda heard it loud and clear this time.
The two-time member of the PBA first All-Defensive team brought the Aces down in the pivotal final minute after stealing two Alaska possessions and scoring twice to push the Aces to 2-4 win-loss card tied with Welcoat and Purefoods.
High Note
“We started hot and finished the game on high note,” said veteran Arboleda, who torched the Aces with 21 points on 4-of-12 shooting beyond the arc and grabbed three steals. “Our confidence to win tonight really drives us there.”
Alaska came up within 76-73 – the nearest they had – after Jeffrey Cariaso’s jumper with 5:29 to go, but Arboleda stole the ball off Cariaso and passed it to Arwind Santos for an easy lay-up that capped a 9-1 run to stretch the lead to 85-74 with 1:18 to go.
Then, the Express’ defense took care of everything in the last minute to preserve the win.
“Wynne creates something big tonight. He spelled the difference in this game,” Perasol said. “Our other guards, Marvin Cruz and Egay Billiones, may just be running our plays, but Wynne sees everything. He really delivered tonight.”
Defense
Thomas, who is presently averaging 24.6 points, 14.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game, took advantage Holcomb’s absence by scoring 14 of his 25 points in first half along with 17 rebounds and six assists.
“With our defense holding them (Alaska) below the 80-point barrier, victory is expected for us,” said Thomas, who shot 10-of-19 in the field. “We have to execute this kind of defense every game. If we do, we can win more games.”
The loss of 23.2 points and 13.4 rebounds per outing of Holcomb was obviously a disadvantage for the part of the Aces.
Arwind Santos chipped in 11 points, collected nine rebounds and swatted four enemy attempts.
Air21 came up charging in the opening period, where Arboleda hit nine points, including a buzzer-beating triple that provided them with a big 26-10 edge in the start of the next quarter.
Biggest edge
6-foot-5 Ranidel De Ocampo, who drained 14 points along with five rebounds and three steals, delivered the Express their biggest edge at 47-25 with 7:25 left after hitting a stab. The Express took a 50-36 halftime advantage.
Alaska responded with 27-18 attack in the third period, with Reynel Hugnatan, who made 11 of his 17 points in the third quarter to pace the Aces, making two three-point plays with 2:13 to go to close the third frame, 68-63.
A blazing start of the Aces in the payoff frame turned to scare the Express a bit, but the willingness and the leadership of Arboleda just came at the right time to keep the win.
Biggest factor
Defense proved to be the biggest factor for Air21’s success, getting nine steals and forcing the Aces to commit 27 turnovers.
The Express, who absorbed 19 turnovers only, also gained 31 points from their turnovers.
Air21 won two games by holding their rivals below the century mark, stopping Coca-Cola, 102-95, last April 13 and blasting Welcoat Paints, 105-96, last March 30.
It lost three games by allowing its rivals to score over 100 points, bowing to Talk ‘N Text (95-116), Purefoods (94-102) and Red Bull (92-102).
Air21’s Blog Notes:
Speaking of defense, last year’s MVP Willie Miller, who is currently No. 4 in scoring with 18.0 points per game, was limited to only six points but grabbed nine boards and dished out five assists….
Lito Alvarez, the team governor and team manager, immediately left the game for Baguio City to attend an official business… He just watched and supported the Express…
Nino KG Canaleta was scoreless in 14 minutes but provided the team with great defensive effort…
“It’s just only the timing of this game,” said Perasol in why he did not use KG mostly in this game. “There is a situation that I really need him and I know he will deliver when it mattered most.”
Ervin Sotto, the team’s back-up center, was encourage by this writer to continue finding his “lost confidence” by training himself hard and keeping his morale.
I told him: “Ervin when you find your rhythm against any team, you are an unstoppable force, just the way you did in your amateur days from Saint Francis to PBL.”
“So you have to keep it up and believe.”
Individual Scores:
Air21 86 — Thomas 25, Arboleda 21, De Ocampo 14, Santos 11, Cruz 5, Se 4, Kramer 2, David 2, Billones 2, Canaleta 0, Sotto 0.
Alaska 79 — Hugnatan 17, Tenorio 14, Cariaso 13, Thoss 10, Dela Cruz 9, Miller 6, Quinahan 4, Fonacier 4, Ferriols 2, Aban 0, Cabatu 0, Juinio 0.

I HEARD THAT THERE WERE GRUMBLINGS ABOUT SOME PLAYERS NOT GETTING THE EXPECTED PLAYING TIME AND OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY MOPRE THAN WHAT THEY EXPECTED….THATS BS MAN…TEAM PLAY COMES FIRST…KAHIT ISANG MINUTO o DI KA MAN GAMITIN ANG IMPORTANTE NANALO ANG TEAM, WALA DAPAT PROBLEMA SA GANYAN KASI GAMIT NAMAN LAHAT SA KOPONAN NATIN!
THINK COACH BO TRIED HIS BEST TO GIVE EVERYONE PT,PERO DISKARTE NA NG COACH YAN…
KUNG AKO KAY SOTTO YAYAIN KO LAGI MAG ONE ON ONE SI THOMAS PARA MAS MAHASA SYA, KULANG KASI TOUGHNESS NYA SA DEFENSE.
SI KG NAMAN KASI, MALAMYA ANG LARO, TIRA LANG NG TIRA SA LABAS EH ALAT NAMAN, RELAX KA LANG KG, LET THE GAME FLOW,WAG MO HANAPIN ANG TIRA MO HAYAAN MO NA LANG DUMATING NG KUSA…NAGMUMUKHANG PILIT TULOY ANG MGA SHOTS.
ARWIND MEDYO MABABA PA RIN ANG SCORING, NAG DIP SA LAST TWO GAMES NILA…IMPORTANTE PANALO THIS TIME.
ILANG BLOCKS BA SI ARWIND…4? SI KG ILAN? WELL FOR SOME WHO WILL SAY THAT ARWIND AND KG ARE EXCELLENT DFENSIVE PLAYERS…SORRY TRUTH HURTS…KAILANAGAN NG DALAWANG BATANG ITO IMPROVE DEFENSIVE FUNDAMENTALS NILA FOR THEM TO REALLY PLAY BOTH SIDES OF THE COURT.
SI ARWIND and KG CAN BLOCK SHOTS…TRUE, DAHIL SA LEAPING ABILITY NILA,BUT TRUE DEFENSE MEANS PREVENTING THE OFFENSIVE PLAYER FROM PENETRATING,ATTACKING BEFORE THEY GET A SHOT…KUMBAGA LAST LINE OF DEFENSE NA ANG PAG BLOCK.OBSERBASYON KASI, SINCE MALAKI ANG POSISYON NG LARO NG DALAWANG BATANG ITO NUNG COLLEGE, NGAYON AY PERIMETER PLAYERS ANG BINABANTAYAN NILA, KAYA MADALI SILANG IWANAN, PERO OBSERBASYON DIN NA MAY FLASHES NAMAN ANG DALAWA NA KUNG GUGUSTUHIN NILA KAYA NILANG DUMEPENSA MULA SA LABAS…SIGURO LANG DAPAT MA STRESSS SA KANILA COUPLED WITH THEIR OFFENSE YUNG DEFENSIVE SKILLS NILA ANG MAS MAGPAPATAGAL SA KANILA SA LIGA.AYT!,DI NAMAN SIGURO NAKAKASAMA ANG OBSERVATIONS KO NOH…BAKA MAY MAG REACT NA NANAM DYAN…MIKE OF KUWAIT…TAHIMIK KA AH.
ANG IMPORTANTE NANALO TAYOH!!!!!!
GREAT DEFENSIVE JOB ON MILLER BOYS! KUDOS TO THE COACHING STAFF!NOW PAGHANDAAN ANG GINEBRA AT WAG IBAIGAY ANG 2ND WIN NILA!

NICE GAME, NICE OUTCOME.
REGARDING THE OBSERVATION, MAGANDA YUN AND TOTOO NAMAN. HOPE TO CONTINUE THE SAME TYPE OF GAME, EXCELLENT DEFENSE AND LIMITING OPPONENT TO SCORE. ON PART ON SIR ARWIND, JUST GIVE THE SAME INTENSITY ON THE NEXT GAME, VERSATILE PLAYER SIYA SINCE COLLEGE AND AMATEUR YEARS.
FOR THE TEAM’S POINT GUARD, MR. ARBOLEDA NICE GAME AND COMPOSURE SA LARO SANA LAGING GANUN ANG LARO.
FOR OTHER PLAYERS WHO DIDNT SHOWED UP THAT WELL LAST GAME, JUST PUSH THE TEMPO FOR THE NEXT GAME.

Hi jmarc,
Is there’s anything wrong ba sa sinulat ko kay sotto…at sa sinabi ko sa kanya?
Pano naman ako naging bida? Just asking
jmarc Saturday, 3 May 2008 at 10:15 pm
HAHAAHA!!!!SABI KO NA NGA BA MAG REREACT!!!!ASUS…..EASY KA LANG PAFA JOSEF…very seldom lang kasi ako nakakabasa na nakalagay na may focus yung nag iinterview and highlighted pa.Nothing wrong, napansin lang naman.E di eto pa…..
after hitting Rich Alvarez of Red Bull with a clothesline
Mike of Kuwait, what can you say?!!!!!
Ayt!

nice game talaga ipinakita ng delivery boys kahapon ahhhh, hmmmmm umubra din yung disciplined type of game at hindi lng basta run n gun….
ayos lng sa na ang run n gun type of play but sa napapansin ko kasi minsan masyado tayong nagmamadali resulting to forced shots and messy turn overs but okay lng it is wat the team is known for and it pays off nmn for the team…
that’s right nung UAAP days pa sila KG at Arwind eh legitimate FORWARDS ang dalawa tama ba ako jmarc? eh ngaun they have to guard shooters kaya medyo hirap nga at naiiwan… napapansin ko pa nga nalalagay pa si Arwind in the 2 guard position w/c is medyo off sa playing style niya w/c is being a forward… okay ba observation ko jmarc? if they have to do the job as forwards sa tingin ko lalakas ang defense ng express kasi natural blockers nmn ang dalawa ehhh, para nmn may tulong si THOMAS… mabibilis nmn guards natin ehhh kaya kaya na nilang magdefense sa labas… but then again they did well and they just have to be consistent lng…
ok lng ba observation ko? just tell me if im quite wrong hmmm yan lang kasi opinion ko…

josef ramos Sunday, 4 May 2008 at 12:44 am
Hi j marc I just read your reaction.. Don’t worry I’m not mad about you.. Just clearing something… Anyway, nice advice…
I’ll do it in the off-season…

we are free to post nmn siguro diba as long as it is reasonable and not that foul?
we are free to post our opinions and observations nmn eh, post lang tau…
gibz Sunday, 4 May 2008 at 9:20 pm
isang observation lng ha..
sa tingin ko masmgnda nlalaro ni arwind nga if he is playing in forward position…
So bottom line is arwind is much better in inside game kesa outside so sana mejo adjust ulit ang coaching staff for arwind pero i salute him for his versatility
God Bless Air21
jmarc Sunday, 4 May 2008 at 9:30 pm
Hmmm…okay…clothesline tackle ata yun…kasi kung hitting with a clotheline…hmmmm…anyway…alam ko yung “clothesline” term noh!Anyway I leave it to you guys….kayo naman mga writers eh…kung siguro puro sports fans ang nagbabasa eh pwede pero kung kagaya ko na ordinaryong tao lang eh…hahahaah!!!
Can we win our first back to back this conference? How about making it against Ginebra and Sta. Lucia? Aba maganda yan pag nangyari!Pero pokus muna sa Ginebra…WAG BIGAY ANG 2ND WIN NG BARANGAY!
murdoc Sunday, 4 May 2008 at 9:32 pm
Air21rs,
Let’s avoid having such arguements here at the site, we all know that we’re just giving our own opinions and comments from the game itself. Natural din na minsan due to our frustrations, especially when we lost the game we can’t resist to blame those players who were expected to deliver. Let’s give fire up remarks which can boost their morale, that they can considered as pointers. Sometimes, I’m just reading all the comments from this site to know the lapses when the game and what are the great execution they have made to get a big win, which observed by fellow/avid fan of Air21rs. All of us has the right to suggest and to express opinions, to the extent of limitations that maybe we can offend or motivate.
Goodluck Express…

Ang gwapo ni Marvin Cruz! Sana lagi siyang palaruin!
alonezzz Sunday, 4 May 2008 at 10:58 pm
sa philippine cup kasi eh, he gets to play the forward position where he is known to be known for his swatting abilities… but ngayon sa fiesta cup eh nalalagay sya sa either the 2 guard position or sa SF na position kaya naiiwan sya ng mga binabantayan na w/c can move fast than him but IM NOT SAYING NA MALI NA ANG PARaAN NA ITO AND FOR THE RECORD THOMAS IS DOING A GREAT JOB INSIDE SO IT’S NOT A BIG PROB NA AS OF NOW…
but again observation ko lang to, correct me if im wrong po
Mike of Kuwait Monday, 5 May 2008 at 1:16 am
To All Air 21 Fans ,
Look what Air 21 is having ! Arwind Santos , KG Canaleta ,Gary David , Ranidel De Ocampo,Gabby Espinas , Whynne Arboleda , Doug Kramer , Ervin Sotto ,Marvin Cruz with Egay Billones,Homer Se . Look Back on their Amateur,PBL , MBA days . Ang lulupit ng mga yan ! Do you think that this guys cannot bring a championship ? They can dudes !! Ano ba ang problema ? Cguro alam nyo na ?
Wish ko lang mag champion ang Air 21 ! and How they will do that ? Abangan nyo na lang when Jaworski is around . He must be the coach of Air 21 since 4th quarter of 2007 , Kaya lang di sila nagkasundo ni Mr.Alvarez sa presyo . Sana magkaroon ng 2nd deal ulit . Dapat ireconsider ulit ni Mr. Alvarez ang offer with the assistance of Mr.Bert Lina .
I am not against with Mr. Perasol , Pero kulang sa twist ang coaching system nya . Anyway good luck to Air 21 against sa Ginebra ..Alam ko rin na mahirap mag coach , pero look at the discipline that Jaworski can give to his team and to his players .
Sana gawin ulit ni Whynne yung leadership nya as a Team Captain ng Air 21 ..Whynne bakit di na lang ikaw ang mag coach ? Joke lang ha !! Tutal biyenan mo naman si Boss Bert ! Ha ! Ha ! Ha! Joke ulit ..Gud Luck sa yo SNATCHER .. Sana marami ka pang maisnatch sa game mo against Ginebra .

Any update kung magkakaroon ng game from other country, like UAE?
Good luck!

marqi_21,
I appreciate your ‘dream team’ but it seems like it is impossible to happen for now because most of your desired players are really hard to get.
In many reasons, most of your desired players are highly-paid which will be over the salary cap of the team.
other thing is teams will not allow to release their players without getting something in return.
If you consider getting somebody like willie Miller, you will give a high-caliber player too.
But don’t worry, may be we can get them in the free agent pool…
noname Tuesday, 6 May 2008 at 7:21 pm

It seems na mahirap ata yung gusto ni marqi pero tama rin sya opinyon nya yun eh and at the same time he wants changes although sabi nga nila, management still will decides on this matter.
If im not mistaken last time na nakapasok sa finals ang Air21 nung Asian Invitational pa which they still have tough players like Ren Ren Ritualo - Meneses - Arboleda.
